Google the Trimble method. Follow it to a tee and you will have very good rings.

I just machine a short tube and cut the rings.
It does take a little math as need to make bigger for cut .

Back 1980's At machinery dealer I saw the milling setup KB engine used for milling the ring apart making piston ring.
It was bank of 3 small horizontal mills. KB was upgrading to more automation.
