I have almost completed my radius turner. My question is...If using a contour insert (diamond shaper) do you have to angle the the top of the holder ? If so then how would you use the opposite end for doing concave work ? Or do I just make the tool holder parallel to the center line of lathe?
Thanx again... V45

What type of insert are you using for your ball turners ?? DNMG or DNMS ? I don't know what the major difference is. I would like to use this style as to use making a concave radius as well.
Thanx again

This is what I have so far...it's almost completed...just need to figure out what type of insert cutter to use ??? I also need to cut the under side of cutter post once cutter is decided !!! Was looking at something like this...only live a few miles away from MSC.

I think that the DNMS inserts have a more positive rake angle on them, will have to go and have a look at my packs of inserts.

Paul.

I think that's what I have seen on most turners so that you can just adjust the cutter post (turn it around) to cut concave, something that only has 2 cutting edges. Thank you Paul

Well...I finished my radius turner sorta....while there is a lot of files on how to build a turner...BUT..not so much on set up to actually use the darn thing !! I finished the tool tonight and tried to cut a ball...just made a silly looking knob....I only get semi shperes or just radius on the end of the stock !! How do you set the tool up ?? Also how to use it ??? What's the secret..lol...since I don't know it !!
Thanx again...V 45

V,

I think you have made yours from plans supplied by the Home Metal Shop Club.

If so, then this is the link you require to download the operating instructions for it. A very good easy to understand tutorial.

If you have trouble downloading it, then send me an email, and I will send you the pdf.

John
