Any time I am building I also think about what I want to do next. Each project is picked on what interests me and what I can learn from it. Might be time now to go for an IC engine. Basic and not too difficult. I have several books and looked at plans for sale on the web and think that Upshur might be the way to go. The farm engine can be built as water or air cooled, vertical or horizontal. Hit-n-miss is an option. All bar stock materials (so I can re-do screw ups) and a reasonable size. At some point I would like to do something as nice as Jerry Howell's Farm Boy.

Anybody with experience building one of these? Any other suggestions?

vette, The Upshur farm engine is a great first engine to do. It was my first as well. The plans are easy to follow and like you said its easy to remake the part if there is a problem. The farmboy look to be a bigger undertaking again with no castings just a lot bigger to make. Happy chips

The Upshur is a great first ic engine. I built mine from the plans is Simply IC magazine. Was a very easy and interesting build. Ray

The Upshur was my first IC. In fact, it was my first project ever. I learned how to use my lathe building it. And when it actually started and ran I had a perpetual smile on my face for two weeks. ;D I was so happy I actually did some stuff on my honeydo list.

.........I joined this forum this week because I'm getting the I/C intrest in my blood now after building Stirlings the last 4 years. Both facinated and intimidated as I question my abilitys and patients with making tiny valves, cam profiles, crankshaft & carborators plus more capital outlay for a boring head and rotary table and clamps. At this time I have the Bob Shores "Eagle" H&M on my list for a first engine..........figure if I garf up a casting I can correct with bar stock. I still have research to do and just might outright buy a 1/4 scale engine to view its operation before starting a build. Glad to see others like me "considering" a step forward in modeling. For me......its not feeling like a 2nd. class metal cutting DWEB after viewing the Cadillac craftmanship and artistry presented here and forums like this by those engineers and machinists who been doing this work for 30 years. Disclaimer: Longboy doesn't really feel like a DWEB......but is a novice! :D

You may want to look at the HHM1 by David Kerzel. He can be reached by e-mail thru FAME and he'll e-mail you the set of plans that includes photo's and construction notes (free). A very nice looking engine.

Thanks for the tip. I went over and had a look. He now has the plans posted for download here:

I downloaded them and will look them over and see if this might be something I want to do. It certainly is a nice looking engine.

Vette,
I like it Thm: Looks like a nice project. I took a set of plans myself, even though I have another project....... but you can never have enough plans.
