Hi,

I've been lurking for a few months now as can be seen from my join date :p, I'm not sure if I've introduced myself yet.....

Looking over various mechanical models over the last few years along with a fascination of anything mechanical for as long as I can remember (about 20 years) has really got me dreaming about making something to call my own and looking through the engine gallery has really inspired me - these aren't just scale engines, they're works of art and they bleed a sort of therapeutic skill and passion, I don't expect to be able to do that level of work anytime soon, but here's to hoping!

I'm picking up my first lathe in the next few days. I don't really know what I'm doing but I'm looking forward to making a few chips and a lot of mistakes.

Hi RussB,

Welcome and no worries. Mistakes, scraps are part of learning. Gus did his fair share of goofs and also had his fair share of success. HMEM folks are very helpful. Are you buying a one size up lathe. Gus nearly bought a lathe that would to small to use.Simple thumb rule. Lathe with 4''
chuck would suffice and mill to take 1/2'' end mill will do. Anything smaller would mean buying another lathe(bigger) and mill too. If one have a big garage then the bigger the merrier.

All success with your projects.

Hi Gus,

I've settled (I hope) on a Weiss WM180V (a Chester DB7VS) as they seem to have a great deal at the moment (4" 3 & 4 jaw chuck, fixed and travelling steadies, a set of disposable carbide tipped tools and so on) I'll also be getting a faceplate as I might use it.

I poured over many many option and while this was basically the shortest distance between centres it was the heaviest machine with the widest bed and largest swing and the accessories really made up the price difference.

I think I'll happily upgrade in the near future if I need to but this feels like a sensibly priced investment considering my free time and ability are unknown.

Thanks for the replies =)

Hi Russ,

Chester is a good buy. My Japanese Lathe is belt driven and set at 600 rpm. At this speed HSS cutters best to cut mild steel and aluminium. Tried carbide inserts and went back to HSS.
Looking forward to see your first project posting. I DIY lotsa lathe accessories as I am at the far end of UK and USA vendors.Buying heavy items such steadies,Rotary Tables etc cost a bomb landed in Singapore.Wanted to buy a ToolMaker's Chest but they won't ship to S'pore. So made my own which was done and posted.
Take care.
Its weekend and gone fishing.
