newbee! first build suggestion?

hi! i have been planning to build miniature engines ever since i saw some clips on youtube... because i build and restore old bikes and cars, i recently bought a small laith and a drill/mill and i have had some training when i was in highschool. so i'm confident i have enough basic skills to venture on this path! however, i don't want to bite of more than i can chew so i'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions on a good first build? i believe a one-cylinder steam or compressed air-type engine would be a good place to start before i take on V8's and whatnot

any good plans out there? being from Europe, preferably in mm's rather than inches...

Take a look at Stirling engine models. Many a machine shop teacher integrates the construction of such with hands on training. In about 60 parts you can make a piston/rod, flywheel, cylinder, radiator, burner, frame and its support pieces of tubing, seals and fasteners. There are many steam engines designed by Rudy Kouhoupt that are very easy to build but will still teach a lot for later more complex models. I like his horizontal mill engine. I think it's best to build one from stock material rather than castings for a first project.

Love the Sterlings Longboy. Another engine type I need to make. So many engines, so little time!!!!

My advice for a first model is pick something you like the looks of or the mechanism intrigues you. Being interested in the project will really help get it done. I'm at the same point as you, just starting out. I made a wobbler for my first engine, Oldest grandson has it now. I made it because I just liked how it looked.

I'm trying to get started on a Paddleduck for my next go around, I just love the look of it. I think today will be a good day to start on it.
