New Tool Holder.

Hi,

Many years ago I bought an inexpensive Chinese/Indian Quick Change Tool Post which after some modification has served me very well. When bought it came with 5 tool holders and over the years they are all used up with tools that I use frequently. I haven't been able to source any extra holders band it wouldn't be too much of an effort to make some however I realised that two of the tools in the holders were tangential where the tool bits were adjustable so I decided to free up two of the tool holders by making dedicated tool holders for them. The machining was straight forward and attached are some photographs of the finished tool holders.

Tony, I like the two holes in the tool holder which really reduces the overhang of a lathe tool that can occur.

If you mean the Tangential Tool it was supplied by Eccentric Engineering an Australian company which I believe has agents in the USA.

Am I suffering from 'something nasty, because I note a firm who sells a tool and cutter grinder either as, plans, kits or completed tools, then sells tangential tools and now is selling tee section parting tools and a jig to sharpen more conventional parting tool blades.

Am I mistaken or is there a reason?

Well they are made by Eccentric Engineering. I have only just had a look at the American agent's web site, there does seem to be a lot. Possibly the apparent number is because the tools are offered in singles and multiples. The British agent who I have dealt with only show singles of Eccentrics products they also seem to be somewhat cheaper?

Sorry to bring up an old thread but is it possible that you can please make a drawing of these tools for me to make as a project? I'm looking for this specific design

Hi Henry,

Is it for a school project or the like? No drawings were made, just dimensioned sketches, which are long since gone. The tool holders were made to suit the dimensions of my lathe, so unless you have the same lathe and tools, the dimensions you need will be different. If you wish I can make a dimensioned sketch for you, a lot of the dimensions are not critical.

I have American/Lantern tool post too in drawer for some types work. It is great for a few jobs very hand on that day.

This is the tool post from my 1909 Drummond round bed lathe, as you can see it is extremely robust but does require quite a lot of set up time. It is made from cast iron.

Hi The tangential tool holder was designed here in Melbourne Australia by an engineer many years ago. I personally have been using one for 40 years. worth every bit of cost in time saving. John

We must have bought them about the same time. A promotional video was sent to the model engineering society I belong to and as a apprentice I had been taught to hand turn metal I knew how versatile a graver shaped cutting tool could be. I ordered one directly from Australia, I think the company was called Burke but I might be wrong it is a long time, and I agree well worth the cost. I now have both left and right hand versions.
