I was lucky enough to find a small local foundry that casts A356 (among other alloys). They were willing to sell me knocked-off sprues and runners from their castings at scrap price in small quantities. It's worth asking around. This stuff has very low surface tension and sand-casts like a dream. It's strong and machines as well as any alloy I've tried.
