How do you make the little photographs that get bigger when you click on them?

Those are attachments Jack.
Below the post window you'll see an "Additional Options" code.
Click on that and you can upload the pictures directly to the server
as attachments. There are limits to the file size and only 4 attachments
per post are permitted.
In a post they will appear as thumbnail images.

The drawback to that is server disk space.
It is actually better to use the off site storage and link to it.
Feel free to use either option.

Please allow me add to Jack's questions.

Which is better for the forum? ??? ??? ???

I notice on some forums that some of the older posts no longer have pictures. Is this because they have been removed from photobucket or what ever program they have used? If the photo is uploaded or attached to the post, will they stay forever?

The reason I ask is some of the stuff I have loaded on photo bucket has been for forum post only and I was considering deleting them from photobucket. If that deletes them from the post, I will leave them alone.

Photos add so much to these forums.

Off site storage is better for us at HMEM.
The server allows us a finite amount of disk space.
If you have a Photobucket, or other off site option available
please use it! Our management team dose make backups of the
data base regularly. However, that is not a guarantee that all
items can be restored. Attachments are at a very high risk of
being lost in the event of a catastrophic failure on the server.

Yeah that's REAL geek S#!T! LOL
But it is very real!

However, if you delete something off Photobucket or even move it around (or if PB goes under), it's gone from the forums...

I host most of my pics on my own server, which crashes occasionally, but at least I control it. ;)

I also use attachments if they seem more appropriate at the time, but try to keep the file size small.
