Hi, I have a Sherline lathe and Sherline mill, I also have a Craftex 10x20 lathe. I am finding I need to up grade my mill to a larger one. I am a pensioner so do not have unlimited funds, what do you guys use for the hobby? There seems to be many bench top lathes that look very much alike. I would love to hear your experiences and recommendations.
Thank you.
Terry

Terry, I have similar machines to yours. Taig mill and Taig Lathe, plus a 6" Atlas lathe.
All the engines and projects you see on my web pages are done on those machines. The size of the machine doesn't limit the type of project in any way, but it limits the size it can be. If you find the Sherline too small to fit your projects on the mill table, you might be headed toward one of the chicom X type mills. They seem to be very popular.

Thanks for the reply Dean, I find myself limited in the y and z travel on the Sherline, and also find doing work using anything but brass or alum seems to be a real chore. The restrictions on travel seem to come into play when using a rotary table with a lathe chuck on top.

Not sure what your needs or budget constraints are, but I've been using the Seig SX3 mill for over a year a now and it has yet to leave me in a bind for either work space or performance. I'm one happy owner.

Hi there, i got the Craftex CT129N Mill\Drill (Busy Bee Tools, Canada) and am very pleased with the price\performance ratio. I think the Grizzly G0704 Mill\Drill is the same unit. at $950.00US and the next unit up at $1,600+ I would look at it as having an extra $600.00 bucks to spend on tooling. :) I really like the dove tail column and variable speed with LED RPM readout.

Regards,
Chazz

Thanks guys for the input, it gives me a direction. Having someone who owns a particular machine and liking it is very helpful.

Terry,
I have the Grizzly version of the Sieg X3 mill and like it very much. It makes a good companion to a 10x22 lathe.

Cheers,
Phil
