I live in a small regional town almost 100km from our capital Perth.
My background is as a qualified Instrument Fitter (military trained), moving onto Aircraft Maintenance Engineer (Instruments) and an advanced qualification in Microcomputer Technology. Retired in 2016 and my wife and I then built our own house as it was the only way to get what we wanted.
In my workshop I have a Sieg C6 lathe, Sieg X3 mill and the usual assortment of drill press, grinders, tools etc.
Have recently been making some tools as I unfortunately had a lot of my handmade tools stolen in a break-in.
Have been dabbling in model engineering for some time having started out in 16mm railway but have moved more towards stationary engines now. Currently building the Elmer Verburg number 50, educational model. Now that the house build and gardens are finished there will be more time for workshop activities.
Looking forward to joining in with this group though I suspect I have a learning curve to climb to approach the skills of some of the more proficient members of this group.
Regards to all - Paul Barton

Welcome Paul, glad to have you here.

I had a nice set of new tools stolen recently as well as some equipment; its not a good feeling.
The meth/drug epidemic drives the theft thing in this country, I think.

I like designing and building model engines.
I like the foundry side of the hobby a lot too.
If you have space, you could get into the foundry side of things.
There is nothing quite like casting your own engine parts.

There is a lot of depth of knowledge here, and many folks here have helped me immensely, so that is one of the reasons I try to give back what I can to this site.

Good luck in your endeavors.
Keep us posted on your builds.

Welcome to the group

Hope see some photos of your work and shop

Hey Paul, Welcome, I too was an Instrument Technician, turned software/automation and now dabbling in my spare time with setting up my small garage for modelling, for when I retire in a few years time. Imperial tooling and freight costs is not our friend in Australia !
