Pat,
You asked the right guy about Shay locomotives. The photo is shop number 3296. This is a small class B Shay with a 3-8"x12" engine, the interesting part is that it is boiler with a superheater. The pipe leading to the smokebox is steam to the engine when it originates from the smokebox it is coming from the superheater. That is unusual for a Shay and especially for a small Shay.

The other Vestal Shay with a close road number was #107 this one had a 3-10"x10" engine and is S/N 3284.

Lima had a well equiped photo dept. and those guys were really good at taking locomotive and equipment photographs.

The other photos have to be the Vestal lumber operation but the bottom one with the sheds looks a bit like the Lima Works so I had to take a close look.

Thanks so much for sharing this information. You could hardly bore us with what you have presented here and, in fact, you are helping to preserve some of the knowledge of what others have done. At one point much of this info on steam engines was normal, everyday stuff, but now most of it is in danger of being lost because it is assumed that someone else has preserved it somewhere. (Computers aren't that old, but there is still much info that is forever lost...)

Wish I had more information about the pictures a friend used to have from when ALCO (American Locomotive Corp.) had its huge plant in Dunkirk NY, a few mile from where I grew up. He had some newspaper pictures with 20 or more of the large 4-8-8-4 locomotives all on the shop floor at the same time in various stages of production. An I think that was just 1 shop...

I remembered you said you were a Shay buff.
The locomotive guys (loco guys as I call them) have a lot of good information that can be applied to the model engine world.
That is interesting about the superheat.

Did you ever build a small Shay?
Do you have a website?
