Photos of what you are doing might help us - and stop us asking stupid questions about the obvious.
Like - have you removed the retainer nuts at the rear ? Is the front end an opposing pair and the rear end an "outrigger" in which case there will be an internal retaining/adjusting nut.

You can replace the "tin can" with a drilled plate with three holes (a'la milking stool) with jack rods from threaded rod and nuts.
