Note: I have ran the grinder for this work and have had to lap large engines

I have also have bin tool of hand scraping the head and block

I have actually seen that done about 60 years ago to raise the compression on a Mercury two stroke outboard motor used in racing.---Brian
 
Glass table top and sandpaper? That's luxury that is!
We used to do motorbike heads by rubbing them on the concrete garage floor.
Was a lot younger and fitter then. (And quite a bit less fussy!)
 
I saw this type on granite surface plates back in 70's
