I found this site while searching for lathe mods and kept coming back for more. There are currently no model engines gracing my shelves, but I do intend to remedy that in the not too distant future. The skill that is found on this forum is inspiring to say the least. My machining background is long, but thin. A couple shooting buddies had lathes, one built rifles primarily while the other built parts for his plane and rifles. They were great mentors and teachers. I bought an import lathe about 15 years ago while I ran my own small engine shop and used it to build bushings, jackshafts and tools. The last several years it has mostly gathered dust except when i needed a part or to turn the necks on a batch of brass. Six months ago I bought a Southbend from a Govt auction and it has really pulled me back into the shop and I'm loving it. One of my mentors and I had planned to build a steam engine, but life got in the way. My job moved me, then he passed away while I was over deployed over seas. While looking at the many engines displayed here my interest has been rekindled and I would like very much to build a steam engine. I like to think that George would be pleased that I am finally going to build the engine we always planned to build. I look forword to learning a lot from ya'll.

Hello from the north old redneck, I am sure you will enjoy getting back to it.
Is the Southbend in usable condition or in need of fix up?

Peter

Welcome Old Redneck!

Glad to have you!

@ Catminer,

The SB9 looks rough because the paint is mostly gone and it was covered with a hard layer of grinding slag from sitting for years in the back corner of a welding shop. After disassembly and cleanup I was relieved to find that it has very little wear on the ways and the headstock bearings are tight and smooth. It is ready and capable of close work. When I'm paying attention I can get within .001 of my goal and threading with the sb is a dream compared to the nightmares I had with my old import (not HF's best effort for sure).

old redneck,

Hello,

I am a newbie here as well. Are you the same old redneck that hangs out on the aircoolers.org site?

I am also in Louisiana, about to move back to Hammond. I have very little machining experience, I can weld and fabricate pretty good. I am a certified electrician (or they said i was certifiable). I mostly play with Volkwagen air cooled engines. (full size) I am interested in model engines and would like to hang out here. I promise to stay out of the way.
