Hey everyone! This is my first post on HMEM, but I've been lurking for a few years.

The title says it all. Where should I start??

I have about 7-8 years machining experience under my belt, and access to bridgeports, a sharp cnc mill and a "sort of accurate but not really" lathe with a DRO.

My ideal project would be to build a twin V engine, but I figure I should start off with something much simpler since I know almost nothing about how to go about building an engine.

Let's hear it! What would you guys would recommend for a HMEM beginner?

TMB...

Steam, Gas, Compressed-Air? What kind of engine do you fancy? With your 7-8 years worth of machining experience, you can probably build a decent, bar-stock engine, for starters.

The "Downloads" section, posted on this form, shows the drawings for many engines that will fit your needs. Good luck, and have fun.

I like the look of that McCabe runner barstock engine!

A steam engine would be cool. I don't have any experience working with gas and engines (besides filling up my tank at the gas station haha) so Id rather not mess with that at first so I don't blow my thumb off :p

I'll check out the downloads section and see what I can find.
Any more recommendations on good air or steam powered engines?

Check out Elmer's engines found here. There are many different designs to choose from. With your machining experience, I am sure you wouldn't have too much difficulty with any of them. I have built the Wobbler, Standby, Grasshopper, Twin Vertical Wobbler, Comber Rotary, and Geared. I am currently working on the Beam. The easiest is the Wobbler. My favorites are the Grasshopper and Geared. Check them out and I am sure you will find at least a few that interest you. Good luck on your first engine and be sure to post your progress here.

when times come and you have desided to start at a V-Twin, have a look at the Hoglet V Tvin. You will find several building logs here at the forum. Videos on youtube.
and plans you can get from The Modelengine Magazin.

I wrote these two thread many moons ago to answer this very question.

Selecting a first engine !

I knew you were going to ask.

Seriously though download a few plan sets pick one you like and makes sence to you and build it.

I'll keep that in mind when the time comes! I think it'd be so cool to build a v twin. Especially one that could fit in the palm of my hand

I was browsing the forums and came across this thread here:

I actually really like that engine and think maybe it'd be a fun way to start. Anybody have an idea of what model it is and where I could find the plans?
