Enco R8 Collet Set or LMS end mill holder set?

Rookie requesting information from the group.


Does any body have an opinion on this collet set Enco has on sale? I was thinking about buying an end mill holder set from LMS when I saw this in the sale flyer. I have been using a standard collet set without any problems, except for the occasional issue of the end mill not reaching where I want to mill. In those cases I use my trusty 1x2x3 blocks to "build up" the location of the item.

The endmill holders require endmills with a flat in the shank to be secure. I have a couple of these for keeping some "utility" endmills, but with an R8 spindle mill I think a set of r8 collets by 1/32s is the most flexible choice. Tool changes are likely faster as well.

Some will tell you that an endmill can pull out of a collet. Probably can, with enough power and an aggressive feed. I've not had it happen, but I'm careful to ensure that the collet bore is clean and dry, as is the cutter shank, and then gt them good and tight.

Buy 'em both. That's what I've done.

Get the collet set for maximum versatility and then buy two endmill holders (3/8" and 1/2") for those occasions when you want to hog the maximum amount of metal and want to be sure the mill doesn't pull out.

R8 endmill holders from ENCO are around $24 apiece so the two most useful sizes can be had for $50.
