I purchased a 2 flute Hertel tapered carbide cutter, 14 deg x 1/16” x 1/8” , ¼ “ shank. As it’s a tapered cutter, how do I determine what speed to run it? By the smaller dimension or by the larger dimension? In the middle?
I bought the cutter to make a flycutter bit for cutting gear teath.

Use the largest diameter that you will be cutting with. The speed will not be optimum for the smaller diameter but it will be safe for the cutter.
If you use the smaller diameter then the speed will be too high for the larger diameter and can damage the cutter.

Thanks, Gail. That actually makes sense to me.
BTW, I like your sig line. We just got two littermate Pug/Chihuahua pups, 13 weeks old now, and our days are filled with spurts of crazy activity, and long naps!

O.K., here they are. Suzie on the left, Buster on the right. Buster is already so spoiled, I can't do much w/o him in my lap...
They can't stand being out of sight of us.

He gave sound advise start with the biggest dia for setting the speed if you think it's to slow you can always speed it up without damaging the cutter. A lot is by trial and error getting a sense of what works for you.

My dad put in a doggy door and a bed to sleep in for the dog in his shop. So now the dog can be with him if he's working in the shop just be sure they are not in harms way.

Thanks Todd. Buster seems to be very attached to me, to the point he gets upset if I'm out of his site. So as the weather warms up. I expect he will follow me to the shop. I will create a safe place for him to observe the goins on and be out of harms way.
Gail's and your input on the tapered cutter do make sense. It is also my first known carbide cutter. Can't wait to try it out, but at 0 deg. F in the shop, it ain't happening today!

P>S>: Gail, I hope to be the kind of person I think my dog thinks I am, but we're not sure yet! We're still getting to know each other...

I know the felling my garage and shop stay about 45 deg it's steel with spray foam insulation and being 35' x 51' with 15' ceiling that's not bad with no heat. I'm in the process if installing a 125,000 btu furnace now so I can use it in the cold weather and I'm hoping to stop some of the sweating. Good luck with your project!

Cute pups Chuck!

Thanks. They are loving, very attached to us,and extreamly entertaining. Nearly house trained, crate trained for sleeping, and can go up and down steps. Buster can jump up into our lap, but Suzie still wants to be picked up.
Anyway, we're enjoying them immensly.
Back to machining and engine building.
