I am starting the turning on the crankshaft pulley for a hit-n-miss engine. Plans call for a straight turn on the OD of the pulley. Shouldn't it be a crown for the belt to self center. I was thinking the pulley may have been originally considered decorative but should there be a crown on it if I ever decide to put it to use.

Hi Paul

Most of the engine pulleys I have seen have been flat; and the implement that the engine is belted has the crown. I have a few full sized pulleys (Alamo, Fairbanks Morse, and John Deere) they are all flat.

I think that you could go either way on the pulley; which ever you prefer.

Thanks for the feedback. I decided to turn a crown even though it's not correct. It's a little more visually appealing and if I ever throw a belt on it there will be less chance of it wandering off the pulley.
