I have been watching Joseph Higgins builds

Looking through his models I noticed the ignition module he uses
CDI using a Hall effect
Went looking and found this on aliexpress

https://vi.aliexpress.com/item/1005006210777871.html

Seems similar to what is commonly used on the hm-01 model hit miss engine however the model uses points from what I can see

I was happy to try one for the team😂😂
They arrived this morning - usual 2-3 week shipping

A quick lash up and we have spark 😀

Anybody else have experience with them?

Looking through the reviews of the

RETROL HM-01 Hit and Miss Engine Model

An example of a model using module with points.

There has been some mention of unreliabilty with the module. Some dead on arrival.
Cheers Jeff

Ps. Now I need to stop casting parts for engines and learn how to build them.

The good thing about Aliexpress is:
  • it is hit and miss (just like those engines).
  • it is like paying for the drinks at the pub, money is gone the moment you order, headache might follow later. (depending on amounts and over all outcome)
  • there are all sorts of "fakes of fakes", you usually do not know. (sometimes the seller does also not know)

I have used that module on several of my models but not from aliexpress. That price is for a new customer and since I have bought from aliexpress before the price is some higher but still very good.

The module and the 1/4-32 spark plug together usually sell for over $50 elsewhere.

This is for my Siamese Bee engine and I would prefer to use a higher quality

set up. Anyone have a good source for electronics and how to set them up? This calls for two double D batteries in parallel, can I use a lithium battery instead?

The Siamese Bee engine is designed for glow plugs. Glow plugs are 1.5 volt devices. Running lithium batteries are higher voltage than what the glow plugs are designed for.

So, run it like the print says to.
Thanks
If you aren't thrilled about the D cell setup, do some searches for glow drivers. There are some set up for multiple cylinders, and the systems run on a higher voltage. They control how much voltage goes to the plugs even with a higher supply voltage. The RC world has them in various setups.

I will look into that, thank you again.

I'm running these AliExpress glow drivers on my 5-cyl radial (one dedicated per plug). So far so good. Specs say 6-24V input. I'm using a spare 3S RC Lipo battery.

While you are on Ali, I can vouch for these harness plugs. They have a very positive internal spring that engages the plug stem. Note that there are 2 sizes, for regular glow plugs & 4S plugs which have a slightly larger diameter stem.
