Bristol SMEE show 2018

I have just returned home after attending the Bristol SMEE show.
Perhaps the world-wide membership would like to see the range of exhibits at the show. This first post covers the internal combustion engines that I photoed.



The Gas Turbine Builders showed a part constructed British gas turbine loco and examples of small turbines for model aircraft use

Tom Pascoe showed 4 of his IC engines

Brian Perkins' Bristol Aquila engine under construction

Anzani and ABC Scorpion engines. Castings available for anyone wanting to build one

Bristol Jupiter nearly finished

Mike Sayers' 4-1/2 ltr supercharged Bentley progresses year on year

E.N.V. aviation motor showing the moulds used for electro-forming the cowls

A full size Curtis OX-5 aero engine, the first type produced by the Bristol Aircraft company
A full size Gnome gas turbine engine behind it

Some of the other exhibits:

Outside, a Foster 4-1/2" scale traction engine gave rides

George King showed his woodturning expertise

The Model wheelwrights always put on a wide variety of traditional wheel and carriage/wagon making models

This Harmonagraph was a Model Engineer design from the early 20th cent.

Model hovercraft were operated in the 'arena' at the rear


This model of USS Missouri in Meccano was very impressive. Over two years to get to this stage

There was a good range of Mamod engines driving various implements

Another outside exhibit was this 52 key street organ. There was another organ outside and they took it in 30 minute turns to serenade the visitors

Alan Hooper gave demonstrations of lathe work with his Hobbymat MD65

Jake Sutton with an example of a clock dial. Sorry Jake, I cut off your head!


A steeple engine for the 1842 Clyde trading vessel Invincible

A 3/4 size model of Robert Stirling's No.1 engine. Design by James Rizzo

A Stuart D10, doubled up and home foundry castings

A Stuart triple expansion engine x 150% with a model of a Pyramid engine, the full size example in the Manchester Science museum. These models made by George Emery who did his own castings
