Hi again, have just taken delivery of a collet chuck and 18 piece set of ER32 collets for the mini mill.Next on my bucket list was for a chuck to fit the sieg
Well described on Utube.I would normally fabricate this item but decided to do it properly,so i bought a piece of 80dia x 60 lg mild steel, however much i hate
turning a large piece of matl into 50% chips.Brief description here with photos to follow.
I rough turned in the 3 jaw then reversed and faced, bored and recessed to fit the sieg spindle.Drilled/tapped and fitted 3 no M6 grubscrews as studs.
Mounted in the lathe and skimmed 3 dias and clocked for concentricity
Demounted and remounted in 3 positions and clocked, all ok to less than 0.0005
and repeatability.Finish turned and bored.I intended to rough bore the taper and finish later but after setting compound at 8o ,boring and bluing with a collet
i found i only had to adjust twice before getting it right without clocking
the compound.Just lucky i guess so finished the bore.Hard part i assumed was the threading.Did all the usual except that i fitted a hand wheel to the rear of the spindle and hand turned.Took me a good hour but a perfect fit.Now i can use the full collet set for holding bar stock, with no drawbar i can hold long lenghs or tooling,it should get as much use as the 3 jaw.Runout is less than
0.0005.A good project and should get plenty of use.BAZMAK

Hi Shoeshop,i made it from 80d x 60lg stock.If i was doing it again
i would make it slightly shorter say 50mm lg.One problem i had was turning
close to the headstock, the saddle handle was hard up to the Hs and i had to
overhang the tool etc.I dont think i would have been successful with power feed
for threading with the variable speed motor.Doing it by hand with a handwheel
to the spindle made it easy, just took a little longer. Also somebody mentioned
taking 4 thou cuts.(n0)First at 5 thou then 3 at 3 a few at 2.Then the rest at
at 1 thou.Finished off at half thou cuts alternating feed between compound
and cross slide. Even a 1 thou cut seemed heavy. In the end i was very pleased with the result.Last serious screwcutting i did was 50 yrs ago in the apprentice school.I am anticipating that i will use collets in the lathe a lot more now i can grip all sizes from 2 to 20 dia with a thru bore.Should also be good for holding
screw threads etc without damage. Will keep it posted. Regards Barry

Collet chuck is getting plenty of use.Its nice to turn/remove a turned part
knowing it will run true. Also good for holding screw threads.I am waiting for delivery of a 2nd collet nut.Sharing with the mill at the moment
Footnote-i took delivery from China of the 19 piece collet set i recieved
an 18 piece set the 2mm was missing but i wasnt too bothered
However when i came to use the 5mm collet it was marked correctly
but was a 4mm collet. Not too happy i am still emailing china but are asking for photos. OF WHAT A missing collet and one that is 1mm small Will keep in touch

Asking for photos is at least better than what some sellers do - demand you pay return postage for the whole set before they'll do anything about it.

As for the photos themselves, if you got a 4mm as well couldn't you take a picture of them together hopefully showing the same size hole, or even both of them on each end of the same 4mm rod? Good luck.

I can appreciate the effort here but I got a straight shank ER32 for I think $35 on flea bay. Runs within .001" on my GO602. Nice to be able to use a collet then quickly go to the chuck.
