July 8th is about 15 days away today.

It was July 8th 2007, a rainy Sunday afternoon, that the idea for a forum called
Home Model Engine Machinist was made public on the internet.
On that date the forum had ONE member and the hits could all be traced to a
comcast server in Hick Town Pennsylvania.

What a difference a year makes!

Today HMEM has 886 registered members and averages well over 2 million hits
a month from all around world.

This place was created because I had questions that I weren't being noticed on
other forums. I was hoping to draw together a few people with the similar interests
in mind.

Today I amazed at what it's drawn together!
There are Masters amongst us as well as raw new beginners.
This is the very first forum I have ever seen where those Masters are willing
to answer the new beginner's questions without treating them like they should
already KNOW that!

OK that may be by design.
I will not tolerate anything other than that! ;)

I'm leading myself off the topic I had intended.

Happy 1st Anniversary HMEM!

This is YOUR forum!

I'm just very pleased to be a part of it!

Rick

Thanks Rick for the original idea, you have created a "nice place to be" and one where as you rightly say, no one needs to be afraid to ask even the most basic question ......... as I've frequently demonstrated and will no doubt continue to do ::)

The wealth of ability, information and experience on here is quite stunning.

Happy 1st Anniversary HMEM! ........... I'm proud top be a tiny part of it

If it were not for this forum I would not have met so many very nice and helpfull people from all parts of the world ;D

I have had nothing but good conversation, help and advise from many of the members on here... The few members I have met are really nice blokes and I will happily meet and talk with any of them again (hopefully for a bit longer next time! Ian and John S)
I have been more than welcomed to John's (BS) home and shop and shown first hand how to achieve things in my own shop (priceless to learn first hand) and not to mention the Enhancement devices I have received to help me on my engine building quest :)

All in all, this forum has made me a far happier person over the past few months, and I can't see that stopping any time soon ;)

So a big HAPPY BIRTHDAY! from me too :D

Thank you Rick, A very good job very well done indeed... ;D  ;D

Ralph.

As one of those who has benefited heavily from the philosophy behind this marvelous forum, I salute your efforts and those of the staff and members. In my more than 18 years of online experience (prodigy was my first connection) I've never seen a forum that had less conflict or personality clashes.

It's become a place I'm proud to send friends, without the least fear of being embarrassed by how they are treated. I can't say that about any other board I've visited. In fact I visited another well known machinist site, over the weekend, and was almost immediately reminded of why I like this place so much.

Congrats and my most profound thanks for your efforts,
Steve

Rick,
Kudos to you and all the others for setting this forum up. It sure is a great place to trade information and learn. I've met a number of members of this forum at model engine shows and, no surprise, they are the greatest people!

Cheers,
Phil

i too am very happy to be part of this forum ;D

but one problem this forum has created for me is the next time i travel south i will have to stop and see a rake60, or if i ever get across the pond i have to look up a bogstandard ??? ;) :D ;D

seriously now thanks to all on this marvelous site i hope it keeps going strong

Rick,

A very large thank you for starting this forum. I've met some very interesting people here. They've been very helpful and informative. I've never seen info exchanged so freely as here. As a matter of fact this is the longest I've ever stayed on a maching forum.

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY TO HMEM AND YOU

Bernd

P.S. The spell checker still can't spell my name correctly! :big: :big:

I too have to say that I love it here. I have really enjoyed the people I have met and glad to of met a neighbor here (cedge). I have never found a forum with as friendly of people.
Below is a post from another forum I lurked on for a while. This post is why I am not active there.

Original question.(omitted info regarding the forum it was on)
"What are the chances of while running your ********, it "back-fires" and the 1lb, 10lb, or 20lb bottle/tank go BOOM?"

Response.
"Have you not read the first item in the FAQ's? If not why don't you believe them? "

Everything after that was friendly and the original poster apologized. But I don't agree with it. If I'm about to blow myself up PLEASE tell me. Yes I'm impatient but one reason I'm here is to learn from all your mistakes. And I share more of my mistakes than my triumphs to try and keep you from making them. We may talk about some of the same things often even though they are on the forum elsewhere, but we reference to previous post and keep on chatting. It gives us something to talk about.
Tim
I would send all of you a birthday/anniversay car dbut my wife may kill me.

This forum has been fantastic, and quickly became my favorite. If I don't have time to look at any of the others, I always find time to look here every day.

Thanks for making it possible!

Best,

BW

Absolutely THE BEST forum on the interweb.

A great idea with great management run this site for it's great members. I am proud to call you all friends. I have got to meet several of you in RL (real life). One of the best afternoons I have had in a long time was sitting and BSing with Rick in his shop. I enjoyed meeting Tin and Phil at Cabinfever. Great guys both of you... Tin, we still need to do coffee! I have spoken on the phone with a number of you... Including a late night chat to get some advice about a mill. ;D I have never seen so many people go out of their way to help someone else... This is a great community.

If only more people were like the members here!

Happy Anniversary and a big thanks to the dedicated founders of the forum. As others have said, it has become the ONLY one I even read anymore and a daily ritual as i sit down at my desk at lunch. Out come the leftovers from the lunchbox and up pops HMEM for a nice break in the workday. Congratulations and best wishes for an even better 2nd year.

Seconded!

I am still very "wet behind the ears" in this hobby but luckily this was the first forum that I came across and haven't looked elsewhere at all. All members here seem to treat others with respect, inept or expert nobody is singled out for "special" treatment.

In my experience of visiting forums in a previous hobby life, the way that some people speak/write when they are hidding behind their keyboards would quickly induce a punch up the throat if they were to speak that way face to face.

Great job everyone involved!

David
