Hello! I joined this forum a long time ago, not long after it was first started. I have been inactive for a long time, choosing to post on some other forums. I would really like to get in a lot more discussion of machining methods and so on, so hopefully that can happen here, as I have not had much luck in other places. There are not many model engineering clubs stateside for in person get togethers, which is a shame, so hopefully this will fill the gap. I’ve set up Youtube channel as part of my efforts to find some interaction, so I may post links in due course.

Anyway, looking forward to some interaction, I’ll be sharing some engine pics and videos soon.

Funny you should ask that - why yes I do. I’ll post some pics tonight. Need to fix up my avatar as well and might change my user name. I keep referring to everything I do as shednanigans so maybe I’ll go with that.

My next project is a beam engine so when that kicks off I’ll post a build log. But I am not a quick builder by any means.

Ohhhh. MInnesota--close to where the action is--that is, where there are nice tools going for cheap all over the place. Wish I lived closer.

I have four engines on the build right now but two of them are the same engine (Coles Corliss) but would very much like to start a beam.

Slow? you are slow? Hah, I have been working on and off on my Coles Corliss since the late 70s. and I don't even have the record! Someone else has me beat.

That's what I hear, although I have been largely unsuccessful at finding used machine tools for cheap. But I've done reasonably well on other equipment like metrology stuff and fixturing. There are quite a few decent auction places going, but used machine tools on the market seem to get snapped up by dealers faster than I find out about them.

Yup, the dealers. They know exactly what we want. Also, they know exactly what it's price should be also in order for them to make that profit. It's good and bad but if you buy from a dealer, you know that what you buy is "Probably" going to be good while if you buy from an auction without seeing it . . . ?!

Yes I think there is a lot of validity to that. Plus the chance to go and inspect the equipment, and often times power it up, so buying from a used dealer certainly has its plus points. Inspecting at the auction is possible but generally you're unlikely to be able to be as thorough I would think.
