I broke one of the plastic knobs on a cheap magnetic base.
The hub of the knob split and the M6 threaded insert fell out of it.

So - I took a piece of 3/4" stock, drilled and bored it to .001" larger
than the hub OD, (.556" to be exact).
Then, turned the OD down to 5/8" and parted off the thin wall band.

With the threaded insert out, I forced the band over the split hub,
then tapped the insert in with a light hammer.

It worked!

Why would anybody do all of that when you can buy a new phenolic knob with a
M6 threaded insert in it from McMaster Carr for $1.83?

It is because you haven't been been brain washed into believing that everything should be replaced rather than repaired. Good for you.
Cost. ?
Satisfaction. Priceless.

Cheers :)
