Hi All,

A while ago I needed to measure a large diameter shaft which my vernier callipers couldn't cope with. I remembered there was an old set of callipers in a box of tools I inherited from my Grandfather about 45 years ago. I dug them out and they were covered in rust and needed cleaning and oiling before I could use them. As I got through the rust I found that he had signed and dated them.
The date was 26th September 1916. What I found so poignant was that when he did this, he probably wasn't aware that his brother Alexander had been killed on the Somme 10 days previously and he certainly wouldn't have known that his brother Alan was to be killed 5 days later on the 1st October.

Regards,
Alan C.

It translates from the Gaelic as An Da Shealadh or the 'Gift' of Second Sight. I can only guess that your grandfather possessed it. I confess that I know a little of it- and wish that I knew even less.

These three brothers were your family, cherish that knowledge- and their sacrifice.
