Hello I have a question or two from the experts. I just finished a restoration on my Clausing 10" I guess I should start from the motor up it's a one horse running a phazepak 220 volts. Motor to jack shaft is a V belt from jack shaft to spindle is a synchronous belt the belt is about 30 years old or more. Would the phazepak or synchronous belt cause a strange pattern on the parts I'm turning, kinda looks like a slight swirl like pattern or barber's poll, the slower the feed the more prominent it looks any advice or in site would be of great help thanks.

I have had a similar effect on another lathe with worn headstock bearings. Don't know if that is relevant. I suspect the synchronous belt could be causing it. I have also seen it on an acquaintances Myford Super 7 with totally worn out drive belts. The effect was getting fairly pronounced just before the belt snapped. I think it was caused by vibration transmitted by the damaged belt.

Richard.
