Guys I know some of you have no access to 3 phase but want or need it and not much out there without huge expense. But after sitting through a seminar there are some options. AC Tech’s SMVector frequency inverter will power up to a 1.5hp 3phase from 120V 1 phase (est $200) and a 3hp 3phase from 240V 1 phase (est $300). You can even go up to 10hp if needed on 240V, but not sure about the pricing of that. You can now power small hp motors with single phase, don’t that give hope to those guys wanting bigger equipment in their single phase garage.

Cool.. I'm not sure how they get 1.5hp from 110v without overloading the circuit, but cool nonetheless. The best the TECO FM50's can do from 110 is 1HP, and they're V/HZ instead of vector.

I have just been through the replacement of a 240v(UK) motor with a 3 phase new 1HP with inverter and remote control. I would recommend the system to anyone. I now have a high torqque system that has soft start and variable control. If you want to see more I have a refurbishment thread on HMEM below, or the place I bought my system from (in the UK) has a useful guide (again below)
