The man with stainless steel knees---off topic a bit

Glad you are up and about and into the PT! You'll be back in the shop building things in no time now! Had my right hip replaced a little over 2 weeks ago. I'm walking without a cane now and have pretty good range of motion. I have PT twice a week, and when I can put on my right sock again...

    Cross Slide Dial

I ended up watching his whole set of 4 videos on this topic just for the heck of it. I came away wondering if I need to make a new, larger dial from my South Bend.

    Upshur's opposed twin engine

Wishing you a speedy recovery, Brian! I'm headed in Monday for another hip replacement. Left was done last winter, now the right. Then back to activities like bike trips again!

    Achtung!!

That's an oldie-but-goodie. I first saw it in a camera shop back in the early '70s with only slightly different verbiage to make it camera specific. They used to provide copies for customers who asked. I had the engine version on my hit-n-miss display for several years. Clever, funny, and...

Is there a program to make a 3D model with measurements that is free?

I started out with FreeCAD and got used to it, but ran into the issue with topological naming being broken, particularly when making something fairly complex. I then shifted to OpenSCAD and do most of my modeling there, and import the model into FreeCAD to generate the mechanical drawings...

I need help identifying the model of my southbend 9" lathe. There is no model number to be found, but a serial number cast into the bed is 52636S.

Serial number is usually stamped into the top of the ways down by the tailstock. I think that number cast into it is something else.

    Cast iron, in a microwave?

It usually isn't the microwave that's damaged, since there really isn't anything there to hurt. It's whatever was put in the microwave. Here's an interesting site I discovered well over 20 years ago... Unwise Microwave Oven Experiments

    Upshur's opposed twin engine

That's great news, Brian! Welcome back to the shop! I'm glad you are feeling better and getting active again.

    Upshur's opposed twin engine

Sorry to hear about the setback with the upper body pains, but soon things will resolve and you'll be feeling better than you have in a long time. Best wishes for a continued speedy recovery!

    Upshur's opposed twin engine

Congrats on successful surgery, Brian! I hope your recovery goes as smoothly as my hip recovery. Best wishes!

Thanks for the update, Bill! Glad to hear that all went well and he's on the mend.

    Upshur's opposed twin engine

Good luck, Brian. I just had my left hip replaced on 26 Feb. My recovery was excellent and within about 6 weeks I was doing my regular activities again. I hope your recovery goes well!

Standing by to hear the putt putt putt of a another running Rupnow engine!

    Trembler Coils--(Constant spark)

As do I. However, Brian is doing the opposite, using a cam to hold the automobile style ignition points open until the firing part of the cycle. I'm not sure the points will close rapidly enough to make a spark even at modest RPMs regardless of the cam geometry. Seems far easier to do it the...

    Trembler Coils--(Constant spark)

Wouldn't it be simpler to replace the auto ignition points (normally closed switch) with a simple normally-open reed switch for the cam to close for each firing of the plug? That's how it works on all the engines I have worked with. I've had a few full-size hit and miss engines that use buzz...

    Drill press motor swap

Very cool! I just upgraded my 1940s era Boice-Crane drill press from 1/2HP single phase motor to a 1/2HP 3 phase with VFD. I added a speed pot and start/stop switch to a front-mounted panel with a custom 3d printed cover to hold the pot, switch, e-stop and RPM display (tied to one of those...

My Flat Head Hit Miss Engine

Nice work, Ray. I really like the way this is going!

What have you been doing today?

I really like your eased_shapes library. I am just starting to fiddle around with it to gain a fuller understanding of how it works, but it already provides me an easy way to generate beveled edges on cylinders and cubes without the usual fal-de-ral and farfulsnarf. Thanks for posting!

    Today I went to buy a file---and---man---

I went to the big hit and miss engine swap meet in Portland, IN back in 2008, and there was a guy selling US made files for $4/lb! I bought about $25 worth.

Callout to those with some FreeCAD knowledge

This one is the one I used to learn about importing OpenSCAD into FreeCAD: Import OpenSCAD Files In FreeCAD - OpenSCAD FreeCAD I can't remember which ones I used to learn about the TechDraw workbench anymore because it was so long ago, but this one covers the basics. Start at about 1:45 in...
