Aluminum sand casting for Chenery Gnome Rotary

I know next to nothing, but what depth of cut are you using? Former aviator, cool engine to be building! Ron

My Take on a Tangential Tool Holder

FWIW. I use the |Good|Quick|Cheap| you can have any two model. Which two are selected can and does change depending on what I need when and if I have the skills to do what I want. They have changed more now that I'm retired. I still destroy more material than usable, and for the reasons given...

My pleasure. Hope it wasn't disappointing news.

    Mark's Monitor Build

I've not completed any engine work to be honest, I am still learning how to not butcher every piece of material I touch. But I've had a long time interest in the Monitor and that's what lead me here. When I saw the thread, and having had several conversations with Todd while admiring his work, I...

    Mark's Monitor Build

Todd updates his Instagram fairly regularly. He purchased a new to him place for home & shop last year and that has occupied most of his time. He recently posted a model he completed for a client, and he is now the "on call" technician for the rolling ball sculptures at Boston/Logan airport...

Wanted wantedLive Steam Green twin article, 2nd issue May/June 2021

You might find purchasing a one year subscription with access to now several years of digitalized back issues your best bargain. You will also, I believe, get access to the now-discontinued Digital Machinist. At least I do with my subscriptions to two of their other magazines.

LOL, Bozo is the clown who shows up in the shop and ham handily screws things up. I agree with the run on paragraphs. The mill is a Clausing 8511, shipped with a factory installed Bridgeport M Head and, best I can tell, the 1/2 motor. The biggest collet is 1/2" so a bigger motor really isn't...

    Cross side extension build.

Thanks Dave. I do OK with electricity, minor programming, but other than that it's usually an exercise resulting in losing the magic smoke. I had a couple of motors before I moved from free treadmills, but the controllers, at least then, were the problem. The treadmill boards were fully...

Belfair is actually on the Olympic Peninsula straight up Rt. 3 from me, ~ :30 minutes. --- "Yes but . . . " I started to type up the whole issue. Not the same, just another tale of cascading problems. I got the mill with a foot pad motor half installed on a shop made bracket to hold the motor...

    Cross side extension build.

Ah, sorry. Same problem, need my mill to fix my mill. It may be an unfortunate case of poor hardening/tempering. You might want to explore taking the shaft to a motor shop, may be common enough they have a routine fix. I have an original M-head 1/2 hp motor with an old 3/4" shaft. Motor is at...

Dave, interesting idea and food for thought. Sorry, but rather then venture guesses, I'll ask what is the full intent? ----------------------------- After I wrote the above, I did a reverse image search. The original poster listed the the below as the intent. Is it correct to assume you have the...

Cutting oils What do you use?

A recommendation I have followed for all steel on my lathe is cheap, parifin in the US, candles. No odor, re-solidifies so very easy to clean up. Also handy for dripping wax on magnets to clean off swarf. Ron

Question about putting VFD on a step pulley mill.

FWIW. I ran a BP M-head as others mentioned on the ~ middle pulley set, no problems. As screening criteria I suggest you consider this: The manual is available to be read before purchasing. The really cheap units often don't and my experience is unhappy surprises. Can you figure out how to make...
