    Aluminum Piston Material sources?

Maybe Wiseco pistons could help so you could get the right type. The right type may not be the strongest. Cheap insurance. Ceramic coat the top, the dome surface and the exhaust port and let 'er wail! Some aluminums are a third stronger than 7075, up to 780 MPa!( That is about 113,000 lb...

Do not put water into molten metal

I was melting lead for the Linotype machine. About 800 lb pot. piled the old lead in and somewhere was a flattened paper coffee cup. Blew the door off and sprayed the room. Choise words from the printers devil to everyone on Monday morning. Important tip. Thanks.

    Line shaft

Really slow today. Go to the Machinists' Bible "Machinery Handbook" They used to give specs for using wood bearings, don't have a new copy but in the 90s they had it. (Yes the 1990s also!) Just checked the 25th ed, its there. 2000 PSI and 2000sfpm. Not half bad.

    Line shaft

Lignum Vitae. It was good enough for our first Nuclear Sub on the prop shaft. :-) There is, or was a couple of years ago, a Blacksmith shop in Tustin Ca that ran overhead shafts. It was a big shop and they might be a sourse of info. Sorry I don't remember the name. Rob

    Show Us Your Lathe

Wait till you thread on it the first time............ And put a 10psi airline with an oiler to the base of the tailstock, floats on air and keeps dirt out. Remember to put the hole past centerline, away from the headstock.

    tricks with reamers

Don't know if this is common knowledge or not. Need a .503 reamed hole and have a .500 reamer? Take a peice of .003 shimstock about .500 wide and bend it along the side and over the end of the reamer. Lots of oil and you have a .503 hole.

The effects of being out of tram on the mill

FWIW Always check that the vice jaw is still square after you tighten the part. Really check square of part. It used to be taught to twist a head in different ways with different dia cutters to form a certain geometry.

    Combination drawbar tool

If you get a different mill, you could call it a "Bridgeport Basher". :-)

    Mirror finish

I didn't know the end use and with that much tool interface the load can give a nice finish, but not a flat surface. I often type without thinking. I wasn't bashing in any way, just discussing. Not knowing the machine and wear on it, I just wondered. flat is easier with a #1 or#0 radius, then...

    Mirror finish

Is it flat if you flat lap it?
