I do not under stand why folks even suggest Solidworks. They are talking about a program that costs several thousand dollars and the maintenance is in the thousands. Same with Gibbs Cam, Master Cam X5 or X6 13,000 per seat for each. There are very few HSM that can afford those programs so why...

    How to cut aluminium plates

You can cut your material on a standard table saw with a cross cut blade NOT a rip blade. You will not get 2 15X15cm pieces out of you material because you will have a 3.5mm saw kerf to deal with. Set you rip fence to 15cm and if you have them set up a feather board to keep the material tight...

    Using wood for practice?

Machinable wax is your friend. It is not cheap but if you clean your machine well before you machine the wax and set up some temp guards to contain the chips you can remelt the chips and use it again. It machines quite well and there is less chance of breaking end mills. You can also get extra...

    Alibre Help

I have drawn several parts full size in Alibre. When you are done you apply a scaling factor to the part and it is reduced to the scale you want. Then when you ask Alibre to build a 2D drawing of the part it will be in that scale. You can then print the drawing and take it to the shop for...

    3D CAD and Model Engineering

I've only been playing with Key Shot 3 for a short time. I find it fairly easy to use and as you can see it adds to the 3D model 100%. It did cost me a few bucks when I went from PE to Pro. Dave

    3D CAD and Model Engineering

All the cast parts of the drive have been designed in alibre. Shapeways did several of the RPs and I built molds for lost wax investment casting. The castings I have now were cast in the UK or NZ. I have waxes at the foundry in Tacoma WA right now. The molds for the props were a pain with the...

    3D CAD and Model Engineering

Mike is correct that Alibre will run on XP machines. The personal edition is $199.00 and well worth the money if you are designing model IC or steam engines. It will do most of what solid works does for less money. Here is an example of what can be done. This has been rendered with Key Shot 3...

    Alternatives to bearing bronze

I've cast a lot of babbitt bearings. I used a material with the slang man of Monkey Sh!t. I think it was originally designed for pluming work or electrical work but works great for sealing things up so you don't get babbitt all over the place and none in your bearing shell. Dave

You can find Solid Edge here http://www.plm.automation.siemens.com/en_us/products/velocity/solidedge/free2d/ When you are drawing lines and circle you use the reference grid. Once you are happy you go to the Dim tools and Dim the drawing. I don't use this program a lot because I mostly model in...

N.A.M.E.S. 2013 And historic boiler and steam course

OK I can see where that could be a problem. Shame though not being able to see the well built and maintained steam models running. Dave

    "M" Boiler

OK Will each of those right angle joints have a clean out plug. Also looks like doing water side cleaning of the up flow tubes is going to be interesting.
