Electric Starter System for Model Engines

I have put electric start on most of my last few engines. I have used small motors from rechargeable drills available for a few dollars on ebay. Check the rpms, many different ones are out there. For bigger motors I used motor scooter starters from china, again cheap. Various sizes are out...

    1898 Nash Two Cylinder Build

I have had great success using Rimfire plugs made by Paul Knapp. Somewhat pricey but they last and last. He told me that NASA was using them in small thrusters.

    1/3 Scale Ford 289 Hi-Po

I wonder if you could also use hose clamps to supplement the super glue in this application? I have used a lot of super glue for machining and have had mixed results, sometimes it comes apart when it shouldn't and other times it is difficult to separate. I think cleanliness and surface...

    1898 Nash Two Cylinder Build

Will be interested on how you replace the unsightly braided shielding wire with more appropriate wire. I thought the cable needed to be grounded so soldered a ground wire to the cables near the CDI unit and it was dead anyway! Any idea on the proper way to replace the shielded wires...

    1898 Nash Two Cylinder Build

Excellent write up. I wouldn't shy away from mig/tig tacking parts before silver soldering. Warping seems minimal and much easier than all those tiny screws. You can tap everything into square after tacking if necessary. ****oos easily cut out with small Dremel abrasive wheel.

Vertical 4 cycle engine from recycled parts

Brian, Another fix for your timing magnet is to put it in an aluminum/plastic sleeve and insert it into an oversize hole in the gear. Make sure the back side is a ways away from the steel of the gear.

Wonderful engine. I built the Hermes 2 cyl gas engine from his castings-very nice castings.

Ball Hopper Monitor - Casting Project

I suggest you consider a bore that matches the many available rings for small engines/scooters etc. They are cheap and plentiful. If you make your own you can make them that size and if unhappy buy commercial rings. Most are metric sizes. I have been especially impressed with Honda 4 cycle...

No chatter or bending of the valve stem, as long as very light cuts are used. Will chatter with heavier cuts. I hope someone else tries this method and comments.

    Experimental Flash Steam and others

A big drawback with a flat head is the valves are closely adjacent so any valve timing overlap is problematic because the new fuel charge exists from the intake out the exhaust before the valves close.. Also much larger valves are possible with overhead valves. Overhead designs allow the...

My observation is that the crowds are better when the weather is crummy and there are not so many distractions of other outside events' Maybe one reason Cabin Fever is so successful.

Earlier I asked about getting a real nice finish on the valves. Got some really good input. While the valve was in the lathe I spied a lathe tool I bought on a whim some time ago. The tool is one of those Chinese Disc tools, a round carbide disc insert on the end of a stalk. It cut...

2023 Black Hills Model Engineering Show - 9/24/23 Update

The builder of that engine is Cliff Roemisch (? sp) from Piedmont SD. He is a great guy and a prolific builder, he might offer some insights. I don't know if he visits this forum.

    Another Hoglet

The starter is from China, of coarse, and for a motor scooter. I tried one from a Yamaha Jog that was a little smaller and did not have quite enough strength. There is really no magic to this starter business. I've used toothed belts, gears and chain to drive the crank. All work but the...

    Another Hoglet

I just finished my version of the Hoglet. Randall was a good friend of mine so this is sort of a tribute to him. It is modified from his original design but I like to think he would smile. Here’s the YouTube link too:
