    Let's talk drilling...

Thanks Rich - still learning something new every day. Looks like I'll be picking up some carbide spot drills in larger diameters.

    Let's talk drilling...

Hi Rich, What are your thoughts on using a spot drill to start holes that don't have sizes common to ball end mills? Mike

    Band saws

I have 3 band saws, a 20-yo Jet 4x6, a 50/60's era Craftsman 12-in vertical with dual WW/MW speeds and a Roll-in EF1459. The Jet gets used for round stock and small rectangular stock, the Craftsman for sheet metal and the Roll-in for plate mostly and a bit of larger diameter round stock. The...

    Shop equipment options

I've had a Tormach PCNC 1100 since 2006 for mostly hobby and some light job shop use and it has held up well over the years and is pretty inexpensive to maintain so far as spare parts go. If you go looking for a used one be aware that the 1100 has been released in various models over the years...

    Greetings from Germany

That's an impressive set of engines, especially as you are also the designer. If you have the time, it would be interesting to learn what sorts of tools you have or use for designing and building these engines.

    ??? Making Setups

The book Jigs and Fixtures by Colvin and Haas might be a good read. Out of print now, I think, but it should turn up on Ebay periodically. Carr-Lane used to publish a book/manual on jigs and fixtures in support of the related products that they sell and may still do so.

Where to buy acrylic sheet in the US?

My goto is McMaster-Carr for small quantities, say a few sheets of 12x24. They are about the same price as the plastic suppliers near me unless you are buying full-size sheets or custom sizes in quantity. Other options are Alro and Piedmont, but it really depends on where you are located. One...

Autodesk Fusion 360 or other free software?

Onshape also supports SprutCAM through an add-on though I rarely use that. They support several other CAM products the same way as well as Kiri:Moto. https://appstore.onshape.com/apps/CAM?sort=featured

Autodesk Fusion 360 or other free software?

Alibre's Atom 3D is $199 and there is a free 30-day trial so why not try it out? https://www.alibre.com/atom3d/ Here's a comparison chart between the two upper tiers of Alibre and Atom 3D if you want to see what each version gets you.

    Software in the cloud

I doubt that many of your designs would be found, especially now that so many students are using it for remote learning. I'd be more concerned if Onshape let you search on an account or screen name but they don't so you'd most likely have to be found through a random search. None of my files...

Me too, but if you never ask you never get.

    Software in the cloud

I like Onshape as well, but one possible problem for model engineers using the free version is that copyrighted plans cannot be modeled in Onshape without the risk of making the plans public. Back when they allowed 10 private files in the free plan I'd modeled someone's plan set and put the...

    Laser cut gaskets

I'm in the USA and have a 60-watt laser cutter. Would silicone rubber work as a gasket in your application? McMaster-Carr sells it in 0.005" thick sheets and says that it is good to 400 °F. I've cut thicker silicone sheets than that with no problem so 0.005: thick should work fine...

    Tormach 1100MX opinion

Is Charter Oak still in business? Their forum on CNC-Zone hasn't had any activity in a while and seems to have disappeared.

    Tormach 1100MX opinion

Jon - since you are in Ohio and new to CNC, you might want to consider the on-site CNC classes that Saunders Machine Works offers. They have both Tormach and Haas machines so you could see both in action, the classes would help you get up to speed, and John's people seem to be straight shooters...

    cnc engraving recomendations

There are a number of products on the market that can be used to laser mark on various metals with CO2 lasers, like the ubiquitous k40 lasers sold on Ebay and elsewhere. Some product names include Cermark, LaserBond 100, Brilliance, Enduramark and probably others. So far as I can tell these...
