Potty Simpson and Shipton Short Stroke Engine

Thanks Jim I'm sorry to miss you at Harrogate this year I usualy go, but family commitments make it dificult this year, unless their is a change I won't be able to make it. On Friday I took delivery of a 7" flywheel casting from RDG. Good quality a few blow holes on the rim but nothing that...

    Cygnet Royal power rating

I built an engine based on the Cygnet Royal same cylinder dia and stroke but different crank and con rod arrangement and external appearance. Only thing I can add is that on an air pressure of 60psi it does 2200 rpm Another point of interest is that if you reverse the air flow in through the...

Potty Simpson and Shipton Short Stroke Engine

Thought I'd better update the build log 1st making the cast iron cylinder. Turning to size after drilling off set hole The trepanning a groove for some packing, seems to work ok without packing tough, still nice to have the option. Shaft assembly using same method as for the PTFE...

Improved Run Simpson and Shipton Engine

Thanks Guys Still not 100% happy with it, I took the end play out of the fly wheel spindle to try and get rid of the wobble, and its made it more air hungry, strange but it seems very sensitive to the fly wheel, for some reason it will turn over ok by hand with the fly wheel off put the fly...

Improved Run Simpson and Shipton Engine

Thanks for all you're interest and kind comments Chaps Yes it does look better at slower speed as it bedded in it will run slower at lower psi and that wobbly flywheel will certainly have to be sorted. Ron:- Its such a balls aching job setting the cranks that once I got it running I didn't...

Improved Run Simpson and Shipton Engine

Well:- I thinks I've got this sorted now. I made a new piston from cast Iron, I also re sculptured the base to gain better access. I can now get it ticking over at 5psi and and full pressure of 60 psi it does 850 rpm http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WmSIJhs8Vgo&feature=youtu.be Stew

    Stew's Little Orphan

Got myself a little project Its a 5" Gauge 0-6-0 Tank Engine to the Simplex design of Nigel Evans. The engine is about 90% complete it was built by a Guy who due to age and Ill health couldn't complete it. Work remaining is the:- plumbing, boiler feed pump, injector, lubricator, bunker...

    timing stwarts popcorn engine

Hi Jonesie The eccentric is 90 deg infront of to top dead centre. The first thing you have to do is centralise the slide valve travel:- at top dead centre set the eccentric so the front port is just cracking open, wind it to back dead centre and note where the valve is, screw the valve stem in...

    Simpson and Shipton Running (just)

Thanks for you're interest and comments Guys I think you don't realy start to understand an engine untill you start to assemble it and try and get it to run, with this one i'm going through a steep learning curve, I've stripped it down and started to fettle one or two issues with it, the big...

Potty Simpson and Shipton Short Stroke Engine

Cheers Jim/Brian Still a bit along the learning curve to go with this engine. To days lesson:- I made the piston from PTFE it seemed a good idea at the time, I know PTFE has some strange properties and that it has a high figure of coefficient of linear expansion, but I though that shouldn't...

    Simpson and Shipton Running (just)

Thanks John and Jim Well its getting better with a bit of fettling I can get a couple of minutes out of it when the pressure drops to about 40 psi it stops Hi John:- I'll be round latter in the week with a bit of luck we can have a play with it then, I've spotted one or two things that can be...

    Simpson and Shipton Running (just)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0KZoRF8AhRU I think I may have run up against the limitation of the design it will only run for a few seconds with my small compressor before it runs out of wind. After all they only ever made two of them i guess thats why. Stew Edited link - Arnold
