    Elmer's Wobbler #25

The Elmer number 25 is a great engine to start with. It is not without its challenges either. Looking forward to seeing your progress. I am working on the number 25 too - stalled at the moment because I have a habit of jumping around between projects at home, but that's just me, :)

    Hello from Wisconsin

It dumped 14" of snow on us at the weekend, but being out in the shoppe, toasty and warm and working on the machines felt reaaaaaaaaaaally good. This hobby gets us through the winter, eh? Thm:

    milling machine question

What an excellent thread. It's my turn to drag up an old one - demonstrating again what a mine of knowledge this forum is. I am hoping, and quite confident, that in the first quarter of next year I will be in a position to acquire my first milling machine. I already did the starry eyed bit and...

    First engines

Very nice indeed Weez. I'm working on that same wobbler engine myself right now. Er - sort of. I get a bit distracted sometimes. Anyway - your quality of workmanship is great! I like what you did with the base on the wobbler. I might have to pro actively and non fiscally adopt that idea. (Rip...

Oil for a lathe headstock & apron

This is good to know - as I have 4 gallons of it on the way! ;D

Oil for a lathe headstock & apron

Well, for what it's worth my Grizzly chinese lathe manual specifies ISO 68 gear / hydraulic oil. I have to believe that for a home machine user, who's machine tools are not being run constantly (even if you are using them a LOT), you should be fine using either ISO32 or ISO 68. The key here (he...

    Drawn to a Bargain

Well, I learned drafting on the table with ink and square. In my opinion it's an important way to learn drafting, as you get a real feel for spacial interaction. However, I am MUCH quicker and far more accurate with CAD. However, the ability to quick sketch something when in the shop is very...

    Elmer's #33 - a novice makes chips

Very nice. I agree with the slow and methodical approach. Take nothing for granted. All my screw ups have come from charging ahead.

    Elmer's #33 - a novice makes chips

That's some fine work you are doing Thayer. Not sure I buy that you're a novice......you seem to be doing some pretty excellent work!

The Elmer Verburg Wobble Plate Engine

That's coming on really well - nice job! I am very excited to see further progress. Thm:

I just recieved my new South Bend 8K

As well as the excellent lathe you have acquired, I would like to compliment you on the quality of your workshop floor. You have a very nice even distribution of sprinkles on the paint. When I painted my floor, I did a rotten job of throwing the paint chips (sprinkles) around, and so I have...

No need to be at all. That engine you are making is marvellous. Thm:

    Keep your Reciepts!

That is definitely a better approach! OUCH! 30 day warranty on a high ticket item? Now that sucks.

    Keep your Reciepts!

I understand that it is quite simple to get the individual cells for these batteries, I was going to locate the source (you can probably get them from batteries plus), but I stopped looking for the source when I discovered the warranty part. Part of the problem with these battery packs when...

It really bugs me that I spelled "Receipt" incorrectly on the title of this thread.

Model Steam engine use make free power for you shop

Hi Dave SmithDoor, Out of interest, how big do you think your low pressure steam engine will need to be, and what will it cost to make, for you to power your shop with it? You did say the power would be "free", of course that's only after you've shelled out the cash to make it - so what will...

Model Steam engine use make free power for you shop

You make very good points Hank. Your approach is solid - using the available resources to manage energy consumption in sensible ways. Using solar to heat hot water and reduce electrical load makes sense - the other energy saving ideas are very smart.
