    graphite Packing ?

Ron / Stew / Stuart, thanks for your original responses :) ;D You got it Bez. But not so much because of the cylinder and/or piston expansion, but more because of steam efficiency. A cool engine running on steam is less efficient (or uses more steam) as it cannot use the full expansion effect...

    'twisted' brass sheet

Hi Ryan Clamp one end of the sheet in your mill vise, and use another vise or something that can clamp over the other end to twist it straight - that should straighten it up fairly well and evenly. Kind regards, Arnold

    Elmer's #32 - Tall Vertical Open Column

Thanks Jan :) - Yes, I agree there's a certain level of pleasure in making the really small bits... Sometimes it borders on masochism ;D Hi Ryan, no problem; please ask away if you have questions :) Yes, I could have threaded before parting and run each nut over the tap afterwards - in fact...

    Elmer's #32 - Tall Vertical Open Column

:-X I didn't get a chance to update yesterday evening, but it's a bit boring anyway... I just made about twenty 2mm washers x 0.2mm thick from some 4mm brass rod. Stan (sshire) mentioned earlier when I made some other thin washers about a method I'd shown in another thread, but I'll just show...

    graphite Packing ?

A very good question Ron, and one I'm also curious about as to how it's done. I know how to go about stuffing cylinder and valve rod pack nuts, but the actual piston packing has me in the dark as well. Kind regards, Arnold

    Elmer's #32 - Tall Vertical Open Column

Thanks Ron :) - The posts will pretty much be weekend-to weekend now; a sudden cold spell has hit, and I tend to stay out of the shop if the machines turn a cold shoulder ;) Ed, thank you :) - I'm glad there's something of value to you in the posts. I very nearly built the #29 as this build, as...

    Arnold's tooling odds 'n ends

:) Thanks Bob - Sorry for the late reply! Today I interrupted my current engine build to make a bit of tooling that will take some pain out of the engine build. It's something I've needed on a couple of occasions, and never bothered to get around to - even though it's simple to make... A...

    Elmer's #32 - Tall Vertical Open Column

Thanks Dave - scratch.gif Now, why didn't I think of that :big: Something to keep in mind for future fixture plates; it'll be nice to spread the work! Brian, thanks :), they were easy to make. The biggest concern I had was forming the dome with the bits just engaged by the threads. The simple...

    Help with valve

Hi Peter. No, drilling and tapping the valve itself will not work; the valve must be able to "float" on the valve rod, as it needs to be pressed against the valve plate by steam (air) pressure. Kind regards, Arnold

    buying dro direct from supplier

Hi Rich Yes, they're most likely all from the same factory with a bit of re-branding; the unit in your link looks exactly like the three axis version of the one I bought from TheDROStore.com. I'm enjoying it; and it's really easy to use. Kind regards, Arnold
