Cleaning up the new LMS milling vise.

As promised here are the pics of my new toy. We'll start with a side shot. BTW the gunk is dragon fat, not rust: Next a close-up of the swivel base. Some folks hate them, I plan to use the heck out of mine! Here's a pic showing more grease, and the nicely ground surfaces (on TOP...the...

    Little Machine Shop vise.

That's the one. The casting looks better than the pic, at least on the one I got. It's worth the full retail price...the sale just made it that much sweeter. ;D I considered buying a similar vise on FeeBay but decided that I have had 100% good dealings with LMS and knew that if I got a bad item...

    Little Machine Shop vise.

I finally broke down and ordered myself a 3" milling vise. LMS had them on special for $75 and I can't turn down a bargain. This is the same vise that Enco sells under their brand name. My first thought on opening the box was "Damn...that thing's cute!". It looks for all the world like the 6"...

I have a 3/4" straight shanked Criterion. It is a square head model that uses 1/2" bars. Gave a whole $40 for it on Ebay.

    My work for Dubai

In my younger days as a welder I worked on bolted oilfield tanks for the Omar Phase II project in Syria. I specialized in ancillary hardware, mainly ladders, staircases, landings and manway access. I made it a point to sign my name with a MIG welder on the top inside of every ladder rail I...

    Compound slide problems.

Did you buy the lathe new? My 7x12 had no such groove in the gibs. It sounds like it may have been an aftermarket modification to keep the setscrews from chewing up the back side of the gibs. Do you see any screw marks on the rods?

    Oh Deer what a week

Nothing wrong with a little "bumper buck" when the opportunity presents itself. My wife hit a little 4 point this time last year. He did about $2000 worth of damage to her car. The very least I could do to repay him was to clean him up and divide the usable bits into family sized portions. BTW...

Will stainless screws gall in 6061 aluminum?

Good point Steve, thanks! I will reserve the stainless screws for the holders that rarely get changed like dedicated knurling tools and such. I have material on hand to make a total of 21 holders so frequent swapping won't be a big issue I hope. :big:

Will stainless screws gall in 6061 aluminum?

I have a good supply of 8-32's on hand that I would like to use in my toolholders, and just wonder if they will gall up on me.

    Inexpensive DRO from Grizzly

I am thinking in the interim, while we wait for word on the longer scales, that we ought to investigate the possibility of feeding data to the display unit from a digital caliper. There's bound to be a way to wire it up...right?

    Inexpensive DRO from Grizzly

The 2 I ordered last week came in today. I want to like them, I really do, but they just aren't working out for the X axis on my x2. :( I figured by utilizing the center of the table more than the ends I could get acceptable travel for the kind of work I do. The scale really needs to be mounted...
