    Mill mounted Dremel for milling

LMS has a similar one but using a "Proxxon" rotary tool... http://www.littlemachineshop.com/products/product_view.php?ProductID=2892&category= They don't seem to have them in stock but the mount looks easy enough. Here's the rotary tool alone...

    Grinding Wheels

So, I mounted it up, trued it and ground a quick lathe bit. It worked GREAT... removed material faster and smoother than the regular "grey" wheels by far! Even with fresh trued wheels I was never able to get HSS to grind smooth... it would catch and bounce on the grey wheels. On this one, a...

    Lathe Chuck disasters

I considered the chuck key holster/interlock a while ago and never did it on mine. Some thoughts on it, though: A small switch may not be able to carry the current to use it on the “Power side” of the circuit. (IE small enough that gravity on the chuck key would activate it.) You could use...

    Grinding Wheels

Sorry for adding a bit of a "Necro Post" but the info is relevant to this particular thread, and since it's the one that I found the most useful info in when searching for "Grinding wheels" I figure I'd update it. I ordered the wheel from the site linked above (...

    Cooling system help

Hmmm, if you were planning to run a fan then presumably you have some decent amount of battery power available on it. Maybe enough to "cheat" the cooling system using a peilter device? If you haven't run in to them, they are electronic devices that get hot on one side, cold on the other when...

    Lathe Chuck disasters

*knock on wood* I haven't launched a chuck key yet, BUT.... I did once spin it up with a chuck jaw not engaged. It throws those pretty good too. :o I thought it was engaged in the scroll. Now I pull on each one after changing anything so I know it is, LOL.

British 0-4-0 Toy Locomotive: he said

I'm in Denver, CO. Known as a Cow town and for skiing..... hmmm, I don't ski, or have a particular fondness for cows (Except on a plate... med-rare, thank you. I love food that used to Moo.) So I'm not real sure WHY I'm in Denver.... but there I be, anyway. ;-P

British 0-4-0 Toy Locomotive: he said

Dean, LOL... I always have my towel. Well, almost always... I forgot it this morning because my brain felt oddly like it had been smashed out by a slice of lemon wrapped around a large gold brick. Zee.... so when does construction start on the life size locomotive? I went back and read the...

British 0-4-0 Toy Locomotive: he said

Hehe, the best instruction manual "Gotchya" I ever ran across was American, and intentional. It was a universal battery charger for Nic-Cad/Nimh cells (For Radio Control) and buried toward the end was this nugget of information: (Slightly paraphrased... my memory isn't that good, LOL)...

    Pump Center

There's full plans for a similar one on the Projects in Metal website. http://www.projectsinmetal.com/free-project-plan-spring-center-metal-lathe-mill/ You do have to register now (Free), but there's a couple of nice plans/ideas on there.

British 0-4-0 Toy Locomotive: he said

What an astounding thread! Thank you, Zee for letting me "Look over your shoulder" at the whole process. I ended up reading through all 700-ish posts in one shot I was so hooked. I learned a lot I hope to remember.... and a few things I hope to unlearn. (Tutu?) I guess as someone who goes to...

Silver Soldering/Brazing 303 Stainless to Brass

Wow! I'm not the OP, but for my part thank you very much for the info! I also had seen/heard the term silver solder and ended up using what was labeled such from the hardware store... turn out it was the wrong stuff! (US here..) Conversely, had some plumbing to do and went to get some solder...

    VMC - Spot the difference!

Hehe... maybe go even further and replace one with a magic 8 ball with machining related phrases....... "Right on the money" " 'Doh.... broken bit!" "Missed it by || <- That much." "Perfect part! yay!" "Well, it was almost right." etc...

    8x14 lathe mods

Those are "Link belts". They are often used on woodworking equipment to reduce vibration, figured it might be a nice thing to try. You can also customize the length, which is handy...

A small pile of X2 mods...

First chips.... YAY! :big: :big: :big: I started on some 1/4 angle pieces to make some vise clamps, and drew "first chips" with the mill. I was pleasantly surprised at how well it worked... no chatter, nice smooth cut and just plain sounded "right". A far cry from the couple of times I've...

    DTI assembly diagram/tips/pics?

Hahah, true. I do wish I had found something I could point to and say "Ahhaaaaa! THAT is why it wasn't working before." I do have a theory as to what happened, though..... If you look at Pic #1, that long arm with the geared section at the end is my first suspect... it's length and relative...

    DTI assembly diagram/tips/pics?

It didn't have any apparent lubrication when I took it apart, so it makes sense. Plus, the parts that spin have the jeweled bearings, which I seem to recall shouldn't be lubricated? That would mean the only thing that would benifit from lube would be the gear faces... and now that's working...

    DTI assembly diagram/tips/pics?

'Doh! I just realized the folly of how I was trying to set it... LOL, I forgot the dial turns so you need more than just the read limit swing on the dial. So, I'm guessing I just want to set it to make sure that the set screws are what is stopping it and NOT the internal mechanism. Thanks all...

    DTI assembly diagram/tips/pics?

Notch, thanks for the offer, but as it happens I think I got it! :big: :big: It's reading in both directions nice and smooth, and it always snaps back to "0". (Well, almost always.. sometimes it rides the side of the line.) Not to say it couldn't be improved... what kind of lube will do the...

    DTI assembly diagram/tips/pics?

I figure pics would be cool anyway, if only for the same curiosity's sake that led me to take it apart in the first place, LOL. The dial says "Japan" does that make it better or worse than the "China" not-so-Swiss Precision Insturuments one? ;D The big question is my guess is you can't just...
