    First Farm Boy Parts

Here is the cylinder head: The valve stems looked all chewed up in the photo, but they were just dirty where they picked up dark oil from the valve guides. All is clean and bright now... John

    Snow storms in Northern USA

We were hit pretty bad. 28" of wet heavy snow. I ran the snowblower a few times during the storm to keep it knocked down to a manageable level. My road has yet to be plowed. Even with a 4wd drive pickup and good tires, I'm stuck here. I'm pretty sure the truck wouldn't get through that...

    Farm Boy - Crankshaft Material?

I'm currently building the J.E. Howell Farm Boy engine. Mr Howell's prints call for use of Starrett ground O-1 bar stock for the crankshaft. a 1 foot length of this stuff is around $60. Should I bite the bullet and go with it? I can't help but think there must be a good reason for his...

    Which Protractor should I get?

I have this one and like it a lot... It's stunningly accurate despite its price. It's the same one recommended by Guy Lautard on his site... http://www.ebay.com/itm/Measure-Vernier-0-320-Degree-Universal-Bevel-Protractor-/390500679201?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item5aeba77e21 John

    First Farm Boy Parts

Leatherman, The roundover was machined with a 1/16 radius round over cutter. As it turns out the round over cutter I chose had close to the right OD for the smaller ID circles on the OD of the spoke cutouts. For the large radius nearest to the hub, I approached from both edges until I...

Howell Farm Boy - now in 3D!

I started 3D modeling a few Farm Boy parts to help visualize them. One thing led to another and I modeled them all, assembled them, etc. Here's a 3D PDF of the engine... With Adobe Reader X you can pan, zoom, rotate, turn parts on/off, see inside the engine, and more...

    Grizzly Tools

I have the Grizzly G4003 lathe. It's accurate and has gobs of power to boot. It's been reliable. Grizzly also sells the "Shop Fox" brand which I have consistently been less than happy with. John

    3D CAD and Model Engineering

I'd be lost without my 3D CAD. I use Alibre (personal edition). It's a bit buggy at times, but it's one hell of a bang for the buck. I'm currently building the J.E. Howell Farm Boy. Here's the Farm Boy engine as a 3D model that I put together using Alibre from Mr. Howell's prints. Having...

    First Farm Boy Parts

I purchased the plans for the J.E. Howell Farm Boy Hit and Miss engine. The plans are first rate and Mr Howell's design is supurb. I'm a bit of a Newbie having completed only one other engine: a PM Research #7 Twin Cylinder Steam Engine from their unmachined casting kit. I'm likely in...
