    Slide valve question

The steam pressure should keep the valve on its face. There are slide valve designs that have a spring between the valve and valve chest cover. The good thing about slide valves is if you get condensate (water) in the cylinder it will pust the slide valve off the face allowing the water to...

    Testing and setting safety valves

With very little volume of air in the pump any leak will be more noticeable. On a boiler in steam the leak may be no more than a whisp of steam. The safety valve should however be steam tight and release at the working pressure and no more than 10% above with a good fire and blower full on...

    Emergency stop switch position

I have recently finished a rebuild on my Bridgeport mill. I’am six foot tall and was tempted to move the start/stop control panel higher up, I commented about the stupid position of the control panel to a fellow work mate who made me aware that you may have to bend down a little to start the...

    Humour

ADVICE FROM A RETIRED HUSBAND: It is important for men to remember that, as women grow older, it becomes harder for them to maintain the same quality of housekeeping as when they were younger. When you notice this, try not to yell at them. Some are oversensitive, and there's nothing worse than...

Welcome Nick Many small tool rooms had little more than the Colchester student and a Bridgeport. You have the start of a great machine shop and I look forward to your contributions All the best Dave Bick

    Slideway problems

Jim Try a 1/2" lenght of shim of a few tho thick between the gibb and the saddle at the adjusting end this may reduce the slack in the slides if it works you will know what sort of gibb you need to machine and will have the mill to do it on. Dave Bick

Casting Engine Components For a Twin

I have followed this thread and can hopefully share some of my casting moments. I am by no means an expert and like many of you have learnt off others and from books but still have a lot more to learn. Similar to Arties casting this aluminium bearing support was cast using a solid pattern if you...

Casting Engine Components For a Twin

Great stuff Artie Stainless steel pots last a fair bit longer if you can get hold of the metal. The welding rods and the stainless are a lot more exspensive than mild steel, so if you dont mind making the steel ones carry on with them. I will add to the casting thread when I can sort out...

Too Rich For My Hobby Budget

I still like milling machines with handles, but do admire the www.cambam.co.uk lads who seem to make CNC machines out off the scrap box. All the best Dave Bick

    Gib tightness

I would keep adjusting the screw. Maybe count how many turns, that way you can keep a track of whats happening. It would be best if you had no movement when pulling on the bed. That said most of the wear is probably in the middle of the table where most of the milling has been carried out. Try...

    Condensation issues

Jim one of the cheapest methods in protecting machines is to cover them with an old blanket. I do also give the machines a spray of WD 40.I found buying it by the gallon the best and you get a free spray bottle. Dave Bick

    Casting Brass Safety (Zinc Oxide)

It’s a good point. The fumes coming of metals that are molten can be pretty nasty. Some of the old brass founders would have the shakes due to the exposure of the zinc fumes. As pointed out it affects the nervous system. I cast in a very well ventilated tin shed with a large fan blowing behind...

    YouTube Shop

I class myself as a model engineer but over the last year I have been restoring a Bridgeport milling machine. I bought this mill as a” in good working condition” from ebay but when received I could not live with the play in both the slides and the screws and set about restoring it to its former...

Why--What is going on with this Aluminum?

I use a little paraffin (kerosene) in a metal can with a spout as a cutting fluid this helps with the sticky material on the tool. I also have a bigger rake angle on the cutting tool which I find helps with Aluminium Good luck Dave Bick
