    Mystery Brass

While we're playing guess the brass, I've got a ring gear that's a little over 30" around and 4" wide. It came out of a big a$$ winch in the navy yard. Any guess what it's made of? Bob

Box for my miniature ratchet wrench

Very nice. I've been thinking about getting a 3D printer myself for making organizers and boxes for the shop. The only thing holding me back is PLA is biodegradable and the manufactures say it has a life of 15 years or less. Has anyone hade any issues with the prints breaking down? Bob

My Favorite Thread Calculator -Any thread you can dream up.

Excellent sites and I use them often, often enough that I worry about them going away. Like all things on the internet, nothing is forever. Does anyone know where to find the math behind the calculations? I'd like to duplicate the calculators in Excel so I'd have them when that web site goes...

Electroforming - thin walled copper parts from 3D prints

Would placing multiple copper anodes, electrically connected together, around the perimeter reduce the line of sight plating problem and result in a more even plating thickness all around? Something similar helps when electrolytically removing rust. Note, the amperage required may increase in...

    Deals on Alibre

I'm coming from AutoCad LT, a 2d package. I commonly whip out a quick sketch of a maybe a few lines and a circle or two so I can pull off a few dimensions for manual machining instead of doing a bunch of math. Can I do this in Ailbre pro without building a whole 3d model? Bob

    Coaxial Centering indicator VS wobbler

I've had the same problem with a less than Blake quality indicator. ;) To make it work well I had to take it apart and file or stone off the burrs and then lap any sliding surface with very fine compound. I use automotive paint rubbing compound when I need to get very fine. Any lube has to be...

why people like low speed hit and miss engine?

The "miss" part of the cycle happens by the governor holding the exhaust valve open when up to speed. Valve open, no compression so no fire but also no vacuum so fuel isn't drawn in. When it slows down enough the valve is allowed to close, vacuum, compression, bang and away we go again. :) Bob

    Stuart 10v

I believe there is a mistake in the chart above. The U.S. equivalent to 8BA should be 2-56. Very handy chart. Thanks packrat. Bob

Autodesk Fusion 360 or other free software?

The only problem is Autocad won’t activate anything 2000 or older even though you “own it”. I tried to reinstall 2000LT on my computer after a reformat and was told by Autocad, your out of luck. This was a full, paid for version too.

Fantastic engine. Very creative using the wood router to round the edges. Do You plan to hook up the governor? Bob

    Marks Holt 75

Did you use a bluing solution on the heads or the same browning solution as on the cylinders? It's hard to tell if there's a contrast in the last picture. Bob
