Stuart S50 - Replacing mild steel shafts with stainless steel shafts.

Thanks for your comments, I tried to get some PGMS but it only starts at 1/2" diameter. I will use it on ot her projects though 😊 Your three engines look great. Thanks again, Sarah

Stuart S50 - Replacing mild steel shafts with stainless steel shafts.

Thank you so much your your reply, I appreciate yours and every one else's comments. I'll follow your advice and I'll do stainless for the piston rod, that's the most exposed shaft as well. For all the other shafts I'll use mild steel, though I might have some nice shiny silver steel rod in my...

Stuart S50 - Replacing mild steel shafts with stainless steel shafts.

Thanks for your reply. Would any of the common grades of Stainless Steel still be prone to galling when running against/in cast iron, as opposed to miospd steel. Regards, Sarah

Stuart S50 - Replacing mild steel shafts with stainless steel shafts.

After a bit of advice please. I have a Stuart Progress and a S50 to refurbish. All the shafts are corroded and I want to replace them. Is there any problem in replacing the shafts with Stainless Steel, rather than mild steel? Thank you 😊

    Hole in cylinder wall

Hi Guys, Unfortunately the hole in the cylinder is on the steam chest side, so if I fitted and filled the occlusion from the inside/outside I would be messing with the steam chest ports. The piston rings are actually wider than the hole so should not really loose much steam through it. At the...

    Hole in cylinder wall

Hi, The hole is quite hard to get to as it is on the steam chest side. I have cleaned it out and filled it with JB weld. I'll find out when it's built if it works :) Regards, Sarah

    Hole in cylinder wall

Hi Guys, I'll sort out the other problems with the steam engine and try running it to see how it operates. If there is a problem I'll try the JB weld, then if that doesn't work I will investigate making a sleeve, though there is not much extra diameter to play with. Many thanks, Sarah

    Hi Guys

Hi Guys, The nice new Stuart set of castings I have to build is a 10H, though I have a Stuart No.4 and a 10V to renovate. The No. 10V is not too bad, though I might make a new cylinder and cylinder head. The No.4 is not too good and that needs quite a bit of work. I recently changed my...

    Hole in cylinder wall

Hi, The Bore and stroke are both 1 1/2". Apparently the casting set is quite old, the engine was built up and kept as a sort of display piece, but there are a number of machining errors on it. I have taken it to pieces to see if I can get it working. It needs new bearing blocks as there is...

    Hole in cylinder wall

Hi Guys, I've put a bit about myself on the Wecome thread  I will hopefully be running it on steam. Can anyone point me in the right direction to look at sleeving the cylinder. Many thanks, Sarah

    Hi Guys

Hi, My name is Sarah and have over the past few months got very interested in the history and construction of steam engines, particularly stationary engines that drove water pumps and general mill engines. I have an engineering background and my own little lathe and milling machine. I...

    Hole in cylinder wall

Hi Guys, I am after a bit of advice please. I have a small blind hole half way down a cast iron cylinder bore. The hole is approx. 1/8" dia. across and 1/8" deep. Is it worth trying to fill the hole or is there anything else I can do? Many thanks, Sarah
