    Nanolube Lubricant

Boys and girls.... I do believe we've just witnessed a very smooth effort at web site spamming, using a 3 year old dormant thread. What say you? Steve

    Digital Caliper batteries

I know this is an old thread, but that just means lots of the new guys have never seen it. It's about time to make another bulk order of batteries for the digital devices around my shop. My last order with www.sr44.com was back in 2007 and I bought 50 Energizer #357 NiCad batteries for about...

How do you feel about using CNC?

As one who picked the hobby to help save an art that is in a death spiral, I have earned a deep appreciation for the skills and the talents of those who can manually force metal to their will by their very hands. The extensive knowledge base of centuries of labor and ingenuity is quickly...

    beginner wondering about lathes

I'd agree with Lane on one point. If you have to run a mini lathe in a production environment, you'd best look for another job shop. What seems to have escaped from this discussion is the fact that this is a hobby/home shop forum, where reproduction/replication of mass parts is rarely the...

    beginner wondering about lathes

Lane has obviously never had to operate within the limited spaces many of us are stuck with using, not to mention budgetary constraints and electrical supply limitations. American iron is great stuff.... if you can justify owning it, but it pains me greatly to hear anyone take the stance that a...

    Nickel plating

Kel Local professional plater once told me that aluminum requires an application of zinc first. Then it will take nickel and chrome. Steel/Iron/cast iron apparently needs a copper coating to get it right. Don't be afraid to call Caswell and ask questions. They were quite friendly, patient, very...

    Nickel plating

Dean.... The kit Micromark sells is made by Caswell. You might do better on price by going direct. I've used the kit and it works very well. I used it as a bath system rather than using the brush on technique. I keep forgetting to go over to their site to order more plating solution. Steve

What kind of brass do I have?

almost sounds like the Nickel Bronze I have here. Hard, slightly magnetic and cuts with long razor sharp stringers. Beautiful golden silver color that I hope to use for something, someday. Tough stuff for sure. Steve

    Grades of brass

Matt... Wait until you stumble onto nickel bronze. Nasty stuff to machine. It's a nice off silver color and is tough as nails, not to mention stringy.... Got a good stock here and still don't quite know what to do with it. Steve

    Humour

An unusual juxtaposition of events will take place in 2011: Both, Groundhog Day and the State of the Union Address will occur on the same day. Personally, I find it ironic. One involves a meaningless ritual in which we look to an insignificant creature of little intelligence for...

    Sieg SX4 Vertical Mill

I predict we'll see a few Sx3's being modded to add the head lift motor and now I know here my digital protractor is supposed to be stored....LOL. A bit pricey for my pocket. Steve

Well as long as we are on the subject of gears......

Pat I stumbled onto a small utility that took the pain out of the subject. It even gives cutter tip width for single tooth cutting and making hobs. http://www.leatherwoodplayground.com/GearCodeit.zip A similar Utility for metric gear calculations is offered at...

    Metal Prices.... 2011

I visited with one of my local scrappers this week and got a warning. He said copper was on a tear right now and was closing on $3.70 per pound (local), with Brass hard on its heels at $2.60, both likely to rise even further after first of the year. Aluminum seems to be relatively steady for the...

1/5 IHC Famous Vertical Screen Cooled

Jason You might want to experiment with a Vapor Foam carb, while you are playing with it. I run one with Coleman fuel and it's super easy to start and adjust. Super simple design and much less finicky than a needle valve carb. They look cool too....LOL Steve

    Over Crank Engine

Stew Having recently designed and built a 2 and a 3 ball governor, I can attest to all the mentioned factors having a part to play. The interplay between ball weight, arm length and spring tension had me sweating for a little while. I didn't have to deal with the added factor of pulley...

    Microlux - opinions?

I bought my first lathe and mill from Micromark. Excellent customer service before and after the sale. The machines are still Sieg (of course) but they came with a little better fit and finish and more features then some that I've seen others purchase from cheaper sources. I still buy from them...

    Steam Engine: Info Please

As a long time collector of these kinds of engines, I'm going to have to back Tel on this one. It's not an engine I can say I've seen before, but it does have all the hallmarks of a hand made engine, probably from an old kit. There were many sources, some very small and in and out of business in...
