    Screwless vise dude

Anko, That's a very nice solution. I like the way the pins are spread out along the sides. I just have a single pin, similar to Vic's drawing, and the block is a little tall so there are some set-ups where the clamp gets in the way. I like the way you did it. Congratulations!

British 0-4-0 Toy Locomotive: he said

Hey Zee! Congratulations! Sorry to be a little late to the party, busy as heck and just catching up. That's gotta be a blast watching that thing run around the track. I know you'll get the steam problems worked out. It'll just take a little time. Uh, isn't that what HMEM is?? ;D

    AAAA batteries

Thanks for the tip, Marv. I'll have to check that out. I've also read somewhere that the squarish 6 volt lantern batteries are a good source of AA sized cells. I don't remember the exact count but I think it was north of 30 cells. It's been many years since I've dissected a battery, they were...

What is this tool used for?

I think you're right. Some kind of jig to hold parts together for welding/brazing. Looks like a larger version of a tool used for soldering electronics, often called a third-hand jig.

The first steps back into the shop

Glad to see you back in the shop, John. Like BC said, don't over do it. Take plenty of breaks. Savor and enjoy the moment, don't rush into it all at once. Congratulations!

My day as a foster mother

Great story, Steve. I'm another one that melts for little baby anythings. Though, I have little sympathy for full grown squirrels. I've seen, and paid for, too much of the damage they can do to a house. We have an abundance of rabbits and squirrels in my little wooded corner, along with several...

    i dont believe it

johnthomp, Lest anyone get the wrong idea HMEM does not condone thievery, no matter what the circumstances. I suggest you keep your illegal activities to yourself. Better yet, I'll suggest you return the keg to it's rightful owner.

    Close fitting hole

Chuck, I've gotten a nice close fit on 3/32 rod using a #42 drill. Don't know if it will be close enough for your needs, but it worked for me on a rod bearing. I DO have a 3/32 reamer and the fits seem comparable, both deliver a free sliding fit on a piece of ground stainless that mic'd out at...

    Small V8

HUH??? I thought you were only building one, Steve. There's two of them?? Please tell me you photoshopped that...

    Scrap Yard Bummer

That sucks, Steve. Maybe in a few weeks tempers will have settled down and your contact might be able to make some headway. One good point - if you are known to the staff they might be more lenient toward "special" customers.

Nominations Needed For The August POM

    Building a 56mm boring head

Ruh-roh! Arnold is building tools again. This is gonna be fun. Sorry to hear you sprung a leak. I really hate burrs, they drive me nuts. Leaving burrs on tools is just unfathomable, it makes me wonder where else they cut corners. Anyway, I'm along for the ride. Thanks for driving, Arnold ;D

    Advice on building some cranks

Since everything is 3/8, how about press fit with Loctite? Use two longish pieces of drill rod and set them across a couple 1-2-3 blocks to make sure they are parallel to each other. After the Loctite sets, cut away anything that doesn't look like a crankshaft.

    Scratch-built Stirling

Thanks NickG. I remember your first stirling, going through similar tribulations. Seems like ages ago now. You followed that up with a very nice LTD.
