Casting your own steam engine castings?

This is the furnace I built after reading Mr Campbell's book. I cast the floor first and then the walls using a cardboard tube as a form. I cast the walls in two steps. The first casting I used a large tube that made a 1" liner with a low temp refractory and then I used a second smaller tube to...

Casting your own steam engine castings?

It was a desire to try my hand at casting that got me started on making small engines. The Bottle Engine was my second engine build and is still my favorite. Mark T

    Machining a gear

I don't remember. It was a museum exhibit of WW 1 planes and they were only displaying the yoke assembly to demonstrate how the controls worked. Mark T

    Machining a gear

That would be called a crowned ball gear. I have seen those in use on very old aircraft control yokes. Mark T

    CNC Wood Carving Machine Question

I recently upgraded my 20 plus year old CNC router table with a spindle from a Siag x2. My old setup had a tool speed of 10,000 to 30,000 RPM. The much slower (2,500 or less) spindle works great cutting both wood and aluminum. The mess when cutting wood was greatly reduced and I no longer have...

    Stuart Triple new build

I like your style. Some people make a part and rush off to the next part before completing the first part. Yours is fully detailed and even painted. Looks like your a ground up builder. I generally start with the part I may not be able to make. I figure if I can't make it why go on. So far that...

Money to spend on inserts and holder for lathe

I have been using the "economy insert holders" from McMaster Carr and their line of inserts. I have been happy with them but then I have no experience with anything else. Mark T

    Model sized nuts

I get most of my fasteners from McMaster Carr but when I need really small nuts or machine screws with hex head i go to Micro Fasteners. Just ordered some 1-72 nuts and needed a 7/64 wrench, McMaster had the wrench and Micro had the nuts and bolts. Mark

    Lost PLA processes, products, knowledge.

Here is an example of how to do lost foam casting at home the right way. The vibrater is a must as it compacts the sand without damaging the foam part. You can find these on Amazon but do your search for pneumatic vibrater or you will get some intersting sugestions. Ant to make it more...

    What materials to stock?

Just stock up on button batteries, sharpies, cutters and Band-Aids. Everything else as you need it then get a little extra. It adds up over time. Mark

Casting a model engine, part two

I love your casting setup but I especially like your method of removing the pattern from the sand. That is where I muck up the works. Mark T
