Single cylinder horizontal enigne as test bed for multi cilinder engine design

Cooling sleeve with a tight slide-fit on the cylinder lining. Hence the short tapered lead-in to ease installation and scratches due to the fitting test.

Single cylinder horizontal enigne as test bed for multi cilinder engine design

Having an engine to run that slow, that must be really rewarding A nice slow running single cylinder, check from 2:00 onwards

Single cylinder horizontal enigne as test bed for multi cilinder engine design

Conrod bearings, main bearings, crankshaft, piston/cylinder are all sufficiently square and parallel for a smooth motion without binding. Thank god single cylinder engine: piston, conrod, crankshaft and main bearings all in line and square.

in your opinon, what is the youngest age for someone to use a mamod or similar steam toy?

Back then, already 35 years ago, I was 6 years old when I ran the first model steam engine on the dining table under the supervision of my mother.

Single cylinder horizontal enigne as test bed for multi cilinder engine design

Thanks for your information. I will change the CR by reducing the height of the head in steps since the piston is already finished and never thought of changing CR by removing material from the piston  I do not want to build this engine as a hit-and-miss, since I want to see how low RPM I...

Single cylinder horizontal enigne as test bed for multi cilinder engine design

Piston is now parted off from the stock. When I place the cylinder vertical on a piece of rubber and place the piston in the cylinder, the piston remains elevated on the air trapped below the piston. Once the cylinder is lifted/tilted from the rubber, the air can escape and the piston falls...

Single cylinder horizontal enigne as test bed for multi cilinder engine design

Nice seal between piston and cylinder., needed to run the engine without rings. Only have to part it off.

Single cylinder horizontal enigne as test bed for multi cilinder engine design

Hi all, After building several stirling engines and one Jan Ridders engine, my ultimate dream is to design and build a multi (3 or 4) cylinder engine like the old Holt75, Fairbanks Morse etc engines. I would like to see how low the RPM's at which it is still running reliably can get...

    Longboy's "SILO" Model Engine!

I have some question that came up when thinking about my new to be designed engine and your engine. What compression ratio do you have in this engine? It seems to run pretty stable and relative low RPM. Did you correct the volume of the combustion chamber for the volume of the long tubes...

Where to buy HT wire for spark plug in mainland Europe?

Thanks for all the suggestions. I will start with either some multimeter wires or Coax, as I have both of them in sufficient quantity at home. Regards, Xander

Where to buy HT wire for spark plug in mainland Europe?

Hi all, For my single cylinder engines, I have a CDI with a short section of HT wire going to the spark plug. This unit I use for multiple engines by simply disconnection the 4 wires (1x ground, 2x contact pionts and 1x HT to spark plug). Since I want to build a multi (start with 2 and then...

Protect cast iron cylinder against rust

Hi, After building a Jan Ridders engine, I'm planning to design my first engine from scratch. I'm quite confident that I can finish the mechanical design. However I lack some specific information which I hope to find in this forum. My plan is to have the cooling water (with additives) to flow...

    Line boring bar idea

Thanks for your replies. Make me more confident to give it a try. Indeed, I live in Europe. Belgium to be more precise. Pretty used to the metric system indeed :)

    Line boring bar idea

I do not have a square broach. That is why I want to use a round toolbit with a flat on it. I hope this will work well for very light cuts.

    Line boring bar idea

Hi all, After building several Stirling engines and Jan Ridders (like) IC engine, I'm thinking of designing my own 2 or 3 or 4 cylinder IC engine loosely based on the appearance of the BruceMacBeth engine. Idea is to use a build cranckshaft with oversized journals that include ball-bearings...

    Compression ratio for IC engine

Hi all, I'm planning to design and build my first IC engine where I will base my design on several plans I can find online e.g. Webster, Jan Ridders. Here I find various compression ratios ranging from ~3 to almost 10. I would love to make a "slow running farm engine" like engine. Does...

Gearless hit and miss engine of my own design

Hi Frank, The absolute number of lobs and ratchet theet does not matter as long as the number of lobs is half the number of theet (4/8 or 5/10 or ... or N/2*N) This means that the ratchet needs 2*N "actutations" by the cam on the crankshaft for the ratchet to make one full rotation. In the...

Gearless hit and miss engine of my own design

Hi, Very nice engine, especially the gear-less part. In this month's issue of the German magazine "maschinen-im-modellbau" there is nice rotary vane pump (30 mm) in diameter. www.vth.de/maschinen-im-modellbau/1248-rotations-kolbenpumpe-aus-wenigen-teilen-gebaut-mit-bauplan-im-heft/ The...
