    Shop equipment options

Thank you for the thoughtful reply! I'm from northwest Ohio. Because of the auto industry there is a lot of used equipment around here at least if you are looking for bigger stuff. I'm a machinist by trade, so I have most of the important inspection equipment. This is one of the reasons I...

    Any suggested gear cutting sets?

Yep that helps, I was hoping there was a somewhat standard size people use for model engines. Looks like I'll just have to buy or make some as needed.

    Any suggested gear cutting sets?

Thanks Brian. Is there a tooth size you find you use the most?

    Any suggested gear cutting sets?

I've been looking into getting a gear cutting set. Is there a particular sized set that I should invest in first?

    Shop equipment options

I'm building a shop\ mother-in-law suit right now. I'm excited to have my first real shop, but I'm realistically a year away from having the thing finished enough to put a shop in it. So now I have a year to try to figure out what I want to put in the thing. I have a taig lathe that I've been...

    PAW engine taper turning?

If you have dros on your lath and an indicator you can figure out the angle using a triangle calculator from online, but looks like you already have good advice on how to proceed.

    TAIG as watchmakers lathe

I ended up changing the pulley ratio on mine to give it a little more lower end power. I also changed to a wider belt. Those too things helped a lot, but I still have some issues with low end power.

    Plug gauge

There's definitely a feel to telescoping gages, and you are right, if your hole isn't perfect you are only getting one reading. Usually when I'm using them I check the hole in multiple places to see if there is any variance. A lot of times you want to see if the hole isn't perfectly round and...

    Plug gauge

I look on ebay, and I've pick up some common sizes there. Every once in awhile you can find a couple for a decent price.

    Reading Material

It's going to be some time before I can get back into the hobby as I'm building my shop, (with a mother in law suit up top). In the mean time does anyone have recommendations for books\articles relating to engines and this hobby? Half of this will be a garage but here's where I'm at!

    TAIG as watchmakers lathe

Nice setup, I'm in the process of converting that same lathe into a cnc. I ended up using some granite from a sink cutout as my base.

    BAZMAK-Diary of a Myford ML7 lathe restoration

We have some 6 jaw Pratt Bernards at work and they are great Chuck's. One thing I noticed (at least on the newer models) is they grind a .006" back taper into their jaws which makes holding parts straight a pain. I ended up using a borazon tipped insert and I bored the jaws straight and it...

    Essex Caloric Engine Build

Wow nice job! Hard parts to make with a limited setup, but you found some nice work arounds.

    How to stiffen a bolt?

Maybe a stiff spring. You could trap the spring with a nut so you can adjust the tension that it applies to your setup.

Anyone here know about machining HSS?

You shouldn't have any issues machining the material unhardened.

    My "new" toy

Here is a rough video of some tests I was doing. I switch it from the readout being .0005" per line to .0001" per line. https://youtu.be/2BnobzcxGx4

    My "new" toy

Our analog amplifier at work stopped working, and because of it's age my boss decided to buy new instead of trying to fix it. I was able to grab it before someone threw it in the trash, and with a little super glue it is working again. Right now it loses accuracy beyond the 5s on the readout...
