    New mill and lathe.

and some scans for some kind of model - I have a box full of mixed parts and another of not so mixed parts ... may have something to do with this - Bob D always wanted to build the models he bought, but he spent all the remaining years of his life organizing his stuff... there's a lesson there...

anyone recognize these mystery things? "Made in England"

well, I don't know - MW201 is 1.7565" diameter and there are two of those, MW 202 is 1.2285" diameter, they are for pushing something, I suppose - you did get me thinking that they might be pushing wadding into a piece of ammunition, but they just as well could be pressing taffy through a nozzle...

anyone recognize these mystery things? "Made in England"

about those threads on these things: the 1" cylinders, MC 1008 ... one says "Pat Applied for", on another I can read W&W, which ought to be useful. the male and female threads are 16tpi, diameter is .490 to .491 which is nothing making sense to me. the MC1005 has the same threads, as does a...

anyone recognize these mystery things? "Made in England"

Some mystery items from the Bob DeVoe estate. These were in an ammo can marked "T-nut Pullers, burned, rust" Well the can was burned and there was just a little rust, but I can't figure out what they are really for - they aren't like the things I see when I look up "T-nut puller". they have...

    American LaFrance Steam Fire Pumper

there was a time when I was a member of AAW and webmaster for a nearby wood turning club (GWG), we made that exact fire engine out of wood as an entry in the annual contest and won first prize. My part was the seat - that was fun, there was a lot of wood bending in the seat and the supports...

    New mill and lathe.

I had two coaxial indicators, they are gone now - I can post Bob's plans for making one with a pair of inexpensive dial indicators, if that will help you. as for gauge blocks, I have two sets, I can't get either to wring together, that's a disappointment - one is B&S, the other might be lufkin...

    New mill and lathe.

OK - - - maybe he will respond here (???). Me? I list some things on OWWM in a forum called BYOD**, I list some stuff on ebay, and sometimes people call me. I use the same user name everywhere, e.g. william_b_noble. I have some items on my web site (wbnoble.com) but I rarely update that. I...

never use a television for a computer monitor unless it is designed for that purpose. I could offer a long explanation, but I won't.

if you actually want micrometers and last word type indicators you can message me - my experience is that pawn shops are usually (not always) pretty aware of what they are selling. I'm still trying to dig out from under a giant pile of stuff from my friend's estate, I just reached to my right...

    New mill and lathe.

a friend of mine who died a couple of years ago was good friends with Chris, the owner of little machineshop dot com. he examined several of the items of tooling rather carefully, helped evaluate the prototypes from China and designed new parts for some of them. His last purchase of a machine...

What have you been doing today?

there's a ton of videos and also more technical books than I can read with formulae for making springs of all types - mandrels seem to be used only for very heavy wire (like 1 cm diameter or larger) where the wire is heated red hot, formed on the mandrel and then quenched and heat treated, bead...

    Experimental Flash Steam and others

why would you want to TIG weld copper? silver solder is very strong and faster and invisible when done right (well "nearly invisible"). you can also weld copper by putting a current directly through it and bonding it that way.

    Experimental Flash Steam and others

not also that I have read several accident reports, some with death and very serious injuries when the sanding dust from aluminum and iron are mixed in a pile and some sparks ignite the mixture, which is basically thermite. I'd agree that mixing metals from sanding/grinding is best avoided, or...

What have you been doing today?

actually, that Perkins unit does what all commercial spring winders do - with a mandrel you have to calculate spring back, and you don't know what you got til you're done, with the coil winders, you can measure a turn as it comes out and know that all the rest will be identical.

    Installing new lathe

I have a 1200 pound lathe and a 3500 pound mill in my garage, they sit in 1/4 inch (10mm) thick cold rolled steel, , I think I used 6 inch squares. Each pad has a. O10 inch deep recess in the center to hold the machine's foot. The pad spreads the forces out to protect the concrete floor...

    Experimental Flash Steam and others

I must admit to breaking my share of parting tools but usually when I'm trying to cut with an ovrhang of around 2.5 to 3 inches on the tool, so a diameter of 5 to 6 (or more) inches, and always because of binding casused by the tool getting dull, or getting above center due to the 7 deg angle of...

What have you been doing today?

yeah, agree, "weird day" - came out in the morning, someone had broken the door lock on my old Suburban with a hammer, then pried and hammered at the ignition for a while before giving up, called police, they came by and took report, fixed door tumbler, collected the pieces of plastic to reglue...
