What to charge to thread a rod

Could she buy threaded rod from Lowes or Home Depot, in that way you would just need to cut to length and face. The stumbling block may be the 24 tpi, I don't think that is a stock thread.

    junk cast iron

Interesting, I have never had a problem, perhaps if you take the skin off with an angle grinder and then use your bandsaw. I will watch out for the problem in future. B

    junk cast iron

I am a great believer in recycling, but I think I would draw the line at this one unless you intend to get a head for it then you would have a very useful tool at a reasonable cost. For some of my small engines I recycle cast iron window weights which are about 1.25" in diameter, if you do the...

    Tap holder from years ago.

Being a lazy person, I thought that an old drilling machine could be converted into a tapping head. I bought one I found on Gumtree for £10 and converted it which resulted in this item. I am very pleased with it and of course, I have an electric motor and various bits and bobs for use in...

    BA or Metric

There are many knockers of Chinese goods and delivery so here is what happened when I ordered a 5" 6 jaw self-centering lathe chuck direct from China. I was on holiday in Florida, it was a Monday morning and I was due to fly back to the UK the next day arriving early on the Wednesday morning. I...

Scale Model Nuts for Model Steam Engines

I made the two-cylinder version of your engine some years back and used BA hex head nuts and bolts. I just think they look better and I have a stock of them, so no brainer I guess. A good supply of suitable hex bar is always good in these circumstances, after all, there are not hundreds of...

    One way with a chuck

I did the same with a 4 jaw SC chuck some years back. Now it is my standard fit chuck, after all, I don't machine much hex bar mainly round and square. Why can't some decent chuck manufacturer produce a good quality 4 jaw SC chuck with a direct fitting threaded body for Myford, Boxford, etc at...

Autodesk Fusion 360 or other free software?

The old adage, "We are cash rich and time poor", comes to mind. We can always earn more cash, but time is finite and unknown. I also value my time more as I get older since it is an ever decreasing commodity. Just select something you like and have a go at it. Oh, and get a big scrap bin you...

Loctite 680 and its use in a press fit application?

A close fit is the best starting point, but I always use 620 as a belt and braces. Just habit I guess.

Little Adept lathe for my 5 year old

Originally I had an Adept countershaft and motor for my Super Adept. I changed these for the sewing machine motor set up when I was posted to Germany during my RAF service. I left the motor and countershaft in storage in the UK, unfortunately, the warehouse burnt down in 1980, and along with...

Little Adept lathe for my 5 year old

Good to see the youngsters being encouraged to use their hands and minds to produce things. My Father gave me a Super Adept when I was about 10 years old and I still have it ( I am 74 years young). During this time it has traveled with me to the USA and Holland and other postings I had during my...

    Can this be repaired?

Doesn't your machine supplier (Grizzly???) carry the replacements in steel? Should be a part number on the assembly diagram. Cheers B

    Gerry's Beam again.

Glad I can be of help Misterg. I love oak and machining brass, so this was just a natural progression for me. I believe the original design for this beam engine came from Elmer Verberg together with many others. I have attempted 2 more of his designs but as yet I have not been successful in...

    Gerry's Beam again.

I built my version of this delightful little engine some years back, as you can see from the photo I used oak for the mainframe and as much brass as I could, the other parts being made of steel, I bought the flywheel casting directly from China and had no problems machining it. You may also...
