    Greetings from Selangor,Malaysia.

Hello chandrakumar, Welcome to this interesting forum, I am familiar with your part of the world and surprised to see a model engineer. During my many visits to my wife's relatives, I don't recall seeing much interest in steam engines and the like, are there any clubs I could visit when next in...

    Chinese MT reamers .

About 6 years ago I was on holiday in Florida when I saw on a well-known internet auction site a 6 jaw, 5-inch self-centring chuck for sale in China at a very reasonable price so I decided to buy one. I asked for it to be delivered to my home in the UK. This appeared to be no problem so I bought...

    Tooling suggestions sought

I would call myself a "Muddle Engineer" and certainly an opportunist. When I started building small steam engines I only bought what I needed for the next stage of the engine I was building, if I had 6 BA threaded holes to make, I bought a taper tap and a plug tap together with 2 tapping and 2...

Getting in Trouble for Metal Chips in the House

I too have been in trouble with Domestic Management for the metal chips which I unthinkingly bring into the house. My workshop is in the basement but I have to gain entry and exit via the stairs up to the kitchen. Over the years when caught "messing up the whole house" (Unquote) I keep quiet and...

    Hello every one

Hello John and welcome, The choice of which lathe to go for is generally limited by your budget. I have both a Myford Super 7 and a Chinese made 7 x 12 both have their place in my workshop. I have owned the Myford for 30 years having bought it secondhand in need of restoration. I have had the...

    New guy here, Howdy!

Very nice collection, I think all the engines are Stuart. The twin vertical is a double 10V, the single is a 10V and the one in the foreground is an S50. All nice engines. Should give you years of pleasure. A little nest egg too since Stuart kits/engines are getting a bit pricey. All the Best B

    Band saws

Like so many folks on here, I bought a 4 x 6 Bandsaw, a pillar drill, and a 1" belt sander from Machine Mart about 25 years ago. The total cost was around £350 and some of the best money I have ever spent. I think they all came from Taiwan, not the Chinese mainland. I have made a few...

    Shop equipment options

I don't advise putting your Mother in Law in the workshop with you, far too critical, and will report your goings on to Higher Domestic Management.

    Parting tool chatter

I may have missed it, but I don't think Bikr7549 locked the carriage before he made the cuts. This is always a good idea since it gives even more rigidity. I use a rear tool post with a Ganze insert cutter which serves me well, just have to remember to check the tool height from time to time.

    Linux "Q4OS"

I used Ubuntu (or tried to) for a while but in the end, went back to Windows. My short-term memory could be better so I struggled with the new terminology in Ubuntu always trying to find windows expressions. Perhaps my brain needed rebooting. I have a refurbished Dell desktop in my workshop...

    Fine finishing plate stock

I have used a piece of suitable sized wooden dowel cut square to the axis and dipped in fine (or very fine if the material is non-ferrous) grounding paste, It will need recharging with paste from time to time and is best done in a vertical milling machine or a drill with a compound table. When...

    retiring to machinist

I don't know at what standard you are at, but I find Model Engineering (A Foundation Course) by Peter Wright is a very well written book and can act as a reference for most operations you may wish to perform. It is on Amazon (USA) at $29 + postage. Good Luck

    retiring to machinist

Wow ... so much good advice. I wish you well Mrbugbums. Here in the UK, I use a Myford Super 7, a small Chinese mill, and lots of tooling and accessories gathered over the last 60 years I also have a small Chinese lathe which I bought secondhand. After I had changed the headstock bearings for...

Meh - Just a little clean up

The business of "Domestic Management" and the male need to cut materials and make things is always a balancing game. My workshop is in the basement with access from indoors and outside, I also have a series of coir mats that get my working shoe soles reasonably clean before changing into my...
